saitoh183 137 Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 (edited) I noticed that when i want to watch anime that has embedded subs (mkv) that are recognized as unknown language, Roku wont allow me to use them. is this a limitation of the app or a bug? I set it to the sub but nothing appears on the screen. Edited January 13, 2015 by saitoh183

tenchiowo 6 Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 I am having the same issue. The subtitles played in the old version of 1.4 but I just upgraded to Media Browser for Roku 1.78 and although the application selects the unknown subtitle track automatically it does not display any subtitles when played.
tenchiowo 6 Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 @ Luke As an FYI - I just tried 1.80 and still the subtitles are not displaying.
dansblackcat 37 Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 just curious if you changed the setting in the Roku menu?
Luke 38839 Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 no, that looks like Roku device settings, right? those aren't our settings.
saitoh183 137 Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 no, that looks like Roku device settings, right? those aren't our settings. right...and those didnt help either
dansblackcat 37 Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 right...and those didnt help either Bummer. I changed mine from "instant replay" to "on" and it fixed all most all of my issues, however I don't have too many movies with external subs. I hardcoded the subs on most of my movies.
dansblackcat 37 Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 (edited) I guess you could use mkvmerge to open the mkv and change the subs from unknown to english? It might work and it's easy and fast to do. Edited January 27, 2015 by dansblackcat 1

Bamit 8 Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 Hello all, I discovered a new problem with Subtitles and the Roku Emby app. I have my Roku 3 setup to have subtitles play whenever I hit the Replay button. This setting always changes to Off whenever I play a video with the Emby app. I tested this Roku Caption setting using other Apps just to be sure it was not a Roku thing, but this setting always stayed the same whenever using those apps. To test it a bit further, I changed the Roku Caption setting to Always On, and sure enough, when playing a video with Emby, it changed it back to Off. I hope it is an easy fix. Thanks.

Yes, unfortunately, this is by design right now so that we can use our intelligent logic to turn on and off subs automatically.
Bamit 8 Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 Thanks for the fast response, I really do appreciate how good you all are with support questions. I do have one concern though, if I read what you are saying correctly, you turn it off on purpose? Is there anyway I can bypass this, as I always have to fix it when watching Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu and I often forget to fix it after watching something with Emby. Thanks...
ebr 15435 Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 Honestly, I'm not quite sure how we should handle subs on this platform. When we allowed the basic Roku functionality (which is a global setting for all content on the device) we had to constantly field questions about how our subtitles didn't work because they should be playing automatically. So we made it so that we can do this (for the most part) but now people familiar with the Roku behavior then have this issue. The support load/questions have been much less with the way we are doing it now so perhaps there will be some sort of option in the future.
Sammy 767 Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 I know the last post in this thread was months ago and the thread started years ago (has it been YEARS already, WOW!) At any rate, I'm having an issue with no subs playing at all on Second Generation Roku 2's (Same hardware as Roku 3 of that era but sans the remote with the headphone jacks). The subs play in ET and on my ShieldTV but on the Roku they do not show. I checked settings in the Roku and Subs are enabled there but when selecting the caption window and then selecting a subtitle track in the Roku nothing happens. Did I miss something? I'll try to get a log tonight or tomorrow if needed. TIA
