In the attached image you can see that Emby is adding black bars on all sides of my 4x3 content on my 4x3 TV. The content itself has no black bars on any side. This displays fine on Theater. Therefore it doesn't seem to be a server issue. Is there an app setting that would fix this or is this a bug?

Which Emby app are you reporting the issue on? Please me more specific and attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks!

As stated in the title, it's the new app, and this is the windows forum. Is there a special name for it? I'm not sure how it's generally distinguished from Theater, but I thought the way I was saying it would be clear.

I guess requesting logs implies this is a bug. I can get the server log no problem but I haven't been able to find where the logs for the new app are stored.

It's just the Emby app for the device. No need for a special name.

Yeah that's what I thought but Sean was unclear for some reason. Thanks.

If someone can tell me where to get the log files for the new app, I can share that as well as my server log.

In the app settings, go to About and click Log Files at the top.

This image is confusing me.

How does it look like when the app is maximized (not full-screen)?

I don't know. When in browsing mode (not playing a vid), it appears to be full screen, but keep in mind this is an analog CRT so the edges are cut off, which means I can't see title bars or whatever.

Finally grabbed the log files. The server log was quite large so I trimmed the irrelevant stuff.

In case you want a little context with my setup... I have this set up as a 2nd monitor on my htpc for when I want to watch black and white tv shows and black and white 4x3 movies on it. So Emby normally runs on my big flat screen, and then my remote can disable one monitor, enable the other, and restart emby there.

When you put the app in windowed mode on the big flat screen, resize it to an approximate 4:3 size and play that video, what happens - how does it look like?

It fills the window correctly.

Forgot to mention that some of my 4:3 videos have this problem and some don't. And to reiterate from my original post, this doesn't happen with Theater.

When you make the window small and move it to the 4:3 TV, then hit the "Maximize" button at the right top (NOT Fullscreen) - what happens then?

And then what happens when you go into full-screen (by F11 key or OSD)?

When I move it and then maximize, the bars appear. And switching to full screen also has the bars.

I think the issue is that hw acceleration doesn't work for this video output.

Can you please try to set the video quality preference back to the default (Balanced)?

Yes, that worked. So now the question is how do I automate switching back and forth, since "balanced" doesn't work well on my main TV. Is there a file that stores these settings? If so, I can automate changing that file and then re-launching on the other TV.

Posted

There's one file that stores everything. Not a good idea to switch between two, because on each switch you would loose all other settings (also things like window position and state is saved there).

Why doesn't "balanced" work well?

You can always switch to "customize" and change every single thing of the basic preferences.

Balanced has rendering problems on my main TV. I think I found the file and it looks like it's binary (settings.dat). I'll try renaming the file and going with defaults on my B&W, and then restore the file for my main TV. Alternatively if there's some way to sandbox Emby and have 2 installs, I could just have one for each TV.

Better don't do this.

Which problems? And how is your setup?

Which GPUs do you have and  how are your displays connected?

I'm open to alternatives. Otherwise I won't have much choice.

In that earlier thread it was about an Intel iGPU. Your log in this thread shows "ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO"...

Exactly... the former is for my main TV and the latter is for my B&W.

Okay, that one is probably too old for HWA and your CPU is too old as well.

I just read what I had answered in the other thread:

Woahh - Sandy bridge? Okay, that's a lost case then.

Sp, then you're really out of options - on the software side.

Why not buy an old Nvidia GPU?

The app is installed per-user. You can create a second user and then just switch the user. With "fast user switching", it should go pretty quickly.

...and without loosing the session each time.

The ATI card has composite out which I then run through a converter to hook up to my B&W, which is optimal in the sense of signal conversions, so I don't want to make changes there. I could possibly add a video card for the main tv. Something to think about as a fallback.

Changing users isn't ideal for me either.

I'll probably just go the route of swapping settings.dat files.

Thanks.

Why? You can switch to a secondary user (for b&w) without loosing your main user's session.

You could drive this as far as that you could switch via hotkey. When both sessions are active (logged in once) this would go very quickly.
