Hey all,

First time requesting assistance here so let me know if I'm missing anything.

Recently I moved from Intel to AMD as I got a cheap second hand AMD 3900x, which is a significant upgrade from a N305.
As it's an AMD CPU without an iGPU, I went and got an old Quadro P1000, and I've set it up with all the NVIDIA drivers and all. It's set up in Emby as below:

Now the issue I'm getting is that for *some* shows, it straight up doesn't work. I've been testing this by setting the quality in the Emby app on my phone to "720p - 4mbps" (when the show is originally 1080p) and trying to play shows. For the ones that don't work, it just doesn't play anything (black screen).

I've attached two transcoding logs - one that work, and one that didn't. The weird thing is that both are 1080p HEVC, so I would assume the encoding would be the same (but I'm a newbie to encoding video files and whatnot so I could be completely wrong).

Please let me know if there's something I'm missing, or why this might be - thanks a lot in advance!

Upon a quick glance it appears to be the type of subtitles in the files that are causing the problem. In the NOT WORKING you have the error Warning: Hardware-accelerated subtitle-overlay is disabled due to diagnostic option and that message is not in your working one as the subtitles are subrip format vs .ass in the NOT WORKING files. I believe this is confirmed later on in the log with

08:32:36.176 [matroska, webm @ 0x1387e40] Could not find codec parameters for stream 3 (Attachment: none): unknown codec
Consider increasing the value for the 'analyzeduration' (0) and 'probesize' (5000000) options <-- stream 3 is your .ass subtitle and this repeats for every font. It's possible you are missing fonts, I am not certain as I'm not an expert on reading these logs.

Maybe try burning in the subtitles?

Hopefully someone with better knowledge comes forward.

Thanks a lot for having a look! Do you know where in the settings is allowing burn in?

I also tried the "Allow subtitle extraction on the fly" setting which seemed to work on the phone but I tried Emby Theatre on the PC and it played but subtitles didn't play for whatever reason.

I'm using version 4.8.11.0, and I unfortunately don't see these subtitle options under advanced. Is it a plugin I need to install?

Not that I am aware of. I am also on 4.8.11.0

@MacAndBrandonyou need to install the "Diagnostics PlugIn" plugin, to get that extra feature.

@NeminemThank you for that! Installed the plugin.
I've turned on the "prefer burn-in" setting, as well as the
"Allow subtitle extraction on the fly" setting, will have to test a bit more to make sure it works for everything but it seems to be working now! ("prefer burn-in" alone wasn't enough to make it work). I'll have to see if fancy subtitles still work too.

When using this plugin.

I think you need to reenable those options, after every restart of Emby server.
