Update OS on server. Old (2015) installation of Emby. How to keep the settings.

Hi

I have an old but reliable installation of Emby running on Windows Server 2011 since 2015. The fact that it has just worked means I have ignored the fact that the OS is now well out of date and Emby will no longer update after version 4.7.13.0. So I have to bite the bullet and upgrade to Windows 10 (server won't support 11). The disks where my Media files and Metadata folder are installed are using Drivepool and will jump back into life when they are set up. However, all other Emby files are C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming|Emby-Server which seems a strange place for them to be. Is there a way to keep the Emby configuration and users as they are now and avoid setting up the server from scratch? If so how do I go about it. I have backup and restore plug in installed but I'm unsure if this will be all that is needed.

Thanks

Hi, the 4.7 backup is not a complete backup. It is mainly just settings and user data.

One thing you could do is install Emby server 4.7 on your new server, and then restore your backup, and then update to Emby server 4.8.

You just can’t start with 4.8 because the backup system has changed and you can’t restore from a 4.7 backup.

Another option is to just pick up and move all the Emby folders to the new machine.

How did this go?

Hi Luke

I haven't done it yet. Hopefully by the weekend.

The Microservers needed a certain technique (lost in my memory) to make them boot from a specific drive. Did a dry run with the non Emby server and got that up and running. Now to get the other one running before getting Emby reinstalled. One issue at a time is all I can manage these days 👍

I take it previous versions (Emby server 4.7 in this case) are found on github?

In our Emby.Releases repo, yes.

Hi, just thought that would update as I finally managed to update the server.

I got Windows 10 on successfully and installed drivepool so everything was how it had been previously. Installed 4.7 server version. By the time I added the premiere key, so I could use backup plugin, it was wanting to update to 4.8. Once I figured out how to get round that issue I restored the backup and made sure everything was pointing at the right folders.

Strange problem where many older files had lost their meta data and imagery. I ended up manually moving my backed up folders into new locations and pointing everything to them and the problem was solved. All running happily now with original user accounts. Thanks for the help.
