New App Won't Open (Windows)

Yesterday the Windows Store updated Emby Theatre Desktop to the new app. When I click on the icon in my start menu, nothing happens. When I try to open the app from the Windows Store, nothing happens. If found the location where the app was installed. But I have not found any logs that I can upload to help with troubleshooting the issue.

Can you see it under Settings >> Apps >> Installed Apps?

Please uninstall from there and then reinstall from the store.

Thanks for responding @softworkz. Yes, I can see it under installed apps.

I had uninstalled it and reinstalled it before I posted. Nothing changed. I just uninstalled and reinstalled it again after you responded. No change.

Can you check in task manager whether there's a process like this?

image.png

After launching? Does it persist? If you kill it (end process) and launch the app then, what happens?

Are any logs created here: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Packages\EmbyMedia.EmbyTheater_svmepx4c03f7m\LocalCache\logs

Can you see anything in the Windows Event Viewer about app crash, error or something?

The process Emby.Client.WinUI.exe is displayed in Task Manager. And it persists after launching. I've killed the process and relaunched the app. After doing so, Task Manager shows Embly.Client.WinUI as a running process. Emby still does not start after killing the process and restarting.

I've attached the logs from C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Packages\EmbyMedia.EmbyTheater_svmepx4c03f7m\LocalCache\logs

There is nothing in Windows Event Viewer about an app crash, error or anything else pertaining to Emby.

Do you have a custom firewall installed or something in that direction?

Firewall from Norton 360 with default settings. No VPN.

When I get home later today I'll disable the firewall temporarily to see if Emby will start after doing so.

Disabling might not help, because the problem is not the presence of another firewall but rather the absence of the MS firewall. The reall problem though, is that the Emby app should not fail to start due to this.

It's fixed in the next version, you don't need to uninstall your firewall for testing (of course you can try disabling).

FYI: New Emby install works fine on Win 10 64bit, but fails on Win10 32bit.  Nothing is installed and no logs to show on the 32 bit workstation.  Just the pop-up notice in the store: Sorry about that... Code: 0x80073CF9

Not compatible with 32 bit?

There's a 32 bit version which goes through automated testing on each release, same like the 64 bit and the xbox version.

Which Win10 versions do you have in both cases?

I get the same thing but was thinking it was the 24H2 issue in other topic.  But see it is the same unhandledexception.

Thanks @softworkz. As you surmised, disabling the firewall didn't fix the issue. I'll report back after updating to the next version.

Duplicate answer to the blog on this topic:

This workstation with Emby Web up and running already fails to install the new Windows Store Emby Theater.

Edition    Windows 10 Home
Version    22H2
Installed on    ‎4/‎22/‎2023
OS build    19045.5247
Experience    Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.19060.1000.0

Emby Web is up and running on this box.  Again, maybe you need to actually be admin to install.  The other workstation Win 64 latest installs fine.  It could also be I may have locked out some Windows store feature.  I could try to install something else.  Happy to test further, if you don't find a reason.

No.

That seems more likely, given the figures of installations and the fact that you're the only having this issue.

Good idea.

sw,

MS Store Downloaded and installed Text edit plus.  Opened admin access and app install tests OK.

Tried again new Emby version from store.
Same error. Download fails, admin not requested

Chrome logs? Why Chrome logs?

Just open the MS Store app, search for Emby and install.

And I'm posting back. Earlier today, the app updated to 2.204.0. Even though the update notes identified the an error was fixed when trying to start the app when a 3rd party firewall is installed, the Emby app would not start. A few minutes ago, the Microsoft Store updated the app to 2.207.0. After doing so, the app starts.

Thanks @softworkz

The 2.204 version has never completed certification, and I doubt that you really had it, because it has the fix included.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear that it's fixed. Thanks for confirming!

I'm a bit fuzzy as to what the Windows Store updated to be honest. At around 1pm, it updated Emby LLC. I didn't actually see the version number. All I know is when I tried to start the app after that update, it still would not start. When I got home later tonight, the app had been updated again. After that update, the app started. I just assumed it was 2.204.0 earlier today, and then 2.207.0 after that based on the version history listed in the Microsoft Store.

Important part, as you say, is that it is working now. And first impressions are extremely positive!

edited to add: Okay, I think I get what happened. The earlier install actually failed with the following error.

I am having this issue too with Emby 2.207.0 on Windows 11. Attached is a copy of the Event Log where I got a 'Microsoft.UI.Xaml.dll, version: 3.1.6.0' faulting module for the Emby app.
