StewieGreen 159 Posted November 9, 2024 Posted November 9, 2024 I have a 2017 Drobo 5C DAS (5 bays) hooked up to my 2014 Mac Mini running all my media and backing up all my files. Which normally is all good - I had a drive die on me a couple months ago and the replacement was super easy. BUT Drobo went bankrupt, and now I'm nervous the whole thing is going to go bust and I'm going to be up the creek. So, I need NAS (or DAS) recommendations. I need something well priced and easy to use (basically plug and play, I don't really have time to learn a lot of anything). Thanks in advanced.
Solution Luke 40120 Posted November 9, 2024 Solution Posted November 9, 2024 Hi, Synology is a great choice, in my opinion. 1
RanmaCanada 457 Posted November 9, 2024 Posted November 9, 2024 Synology are plug and play but they are super expensive for what you get. It would be well worth your time to build your own system and learn to use UNRAID, TrueNAS or Open Media Vault. 2
StewieGreen 159 Posted January 5 Author Posted January 5 And I waited too long ... with absolutely no warning my Drobo died and I can't find a single 5c for sale in Australia. Well, here's hoping data recovery isn't as stupid expensive as I think it might be.

There isn't a single 5c unit for sale in Oz. Yes it would be MUCH cheaper than recovery! But there is a light at the end of the tunnel - I think the power adapter is to blame. I tried starting it up again and noticed that the hissing noise wasn't coming from the unit but from the power supply next to it. Then when I turned it around I saw that the light on the power supply was going out when the Drobo powered down. And finding a replacement for that was easy! 10 hours ago, seanbuff said: hahaha! not to be messed with! Drop bears aren't that bad, it's the spiders the size of dinner plates and the snakes you've got to worry about!
RanmaCanada 457 Posted January 7 Posted January 7 Ah that's great news that it's just the power supply. Maybe get on that replacement haha.
