zac115 2 Posted September 1 Posted September 1 So I have a very simple question. I have a bunch of TS files that I'm about to make a live on my server. My question is this. Should these files be converted into a different container like MKV or MP4. Or is it fine and I can just keep them as TS files. Will there be any kind of issues with people watching things on my servers and playing them back when they are in the TS file format.

They may work or they may not. There was a time, and it could be even now, that Emby did not support TS files at all I recommend converting TS files to just about any other container. I used to use primarily mp4 files but, about 4.5 years ago i switched and I now use mainly MKV. (If you use sub titles a lot MKV make more sense as, with mp4s, subtitles must be in separate files (or actually burned into the video) while MKV allows subs to be imbedded in the file and remain optional during play.
justinrh 201 Posted September 1 Posted September 1 Formats and containers depends on your playback devices. TS files on many devices will force the server to transcode. Generally speaking, like Gilgamesh said, it is better to convert to a different codec (and container). @Gilgamesh_48what video format do you use in your MKVs?

I only need decent quality. I use no advanced audio or video formats as my old eyes and ears do not hear or see any advantage of anything above decent 1080p or basic stereo.
ebr 15346 Posted September 2 Posted September 2 Yes, convert them if you can. A TS file is a Transport Stream and is not designed for seeking (its supposed to be a live stream). Some players can fake it but you're much better off with something like an mkv container.
