gmjh123 2
Hi. I really like the UI and layout of the Android TV app, but I prefer Kodi as the actual player. When choosing Kodi to play Dolby Vision files it either won't play it at all, or plays it with the picture looking completely wrong (green and purple) Is there some setting that I'm missing, or will the Android TV app just not play Dolby Vision files with kodi? Thanks very much
Luke 37956
Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks!

Ok according to the instructions, there should have been some extra tile on my homepage of the emby Android TV app, which there wasn't. But I managed to send a log file by pressing on my username and then choosing send log. The file I was playing is called Kingdom of the planet of the apes. It was sent a few minutes ago (I think I may have sent it twice) Cody gave the message of 'one or more files failed to play'. Do you need any other info? ebr 15179
I'm not sure what Kodi is expecting for a path but it may want an actual smb file path. I'm not sure anyone has tried to use Kodi as an external player before... Here is what we are sending: http://192.168.50.82:8096/emby/videos/1525/stream.mkv?DeviceId=[redacted]&MediaSourceId=ef935842bbac1ea4ec587556a3c9b62a&PlaySessionId=464bf9ff76ad477aa7a7fa078774b711&api_key=[redacted]&VideoCodec=h264&AudioCodec=aac,mp3,ac3&VideoBitrate=79232000&AudioBitrate=768000&AudioStreamIndex=1&SubtitleStreamIndex=5&SubtitleMethod=Embed&CopyTimestamps=true&SubtitleCodec=srt&TranscodeReasons=SubtitleCodecNotSupported and mime: video/mp4 You probably will want to setup the optional network path on the server and then select the option it the app to send the file path to the external player. gmjh123 2
The reason I chose Kodi as an external player to play Dolby Vision files on the Android TV Emby app is that many people online recommended it for exactly that, so I'm a bit baffled as to why you've never heard of it being used that way. (Nobody reported any issues with it either) I'm afraid I don't understand any of your last line about what to do. Can you describe it again in words for dummies? gmjh123 2
Also, I've just realized, Emby will open all files with Kodi as an external player when playing HD files. So it has no problem finding what to play or needing an extra optional path. So surely there'd be no point in providing this extra optional network path? Hi. I'm still looking for help on this. Am I right in thinking that because Kodi will work as an external player for HD files that it doesn't need an optional network path to play Dolby Vision files? What else could be the issue here?

Optional Network Paths I've sent a log where the HD file (called Kill) is played on Kodi, followed by the Dolby Vision file (Kingdom of the planet of the apes) where playback fails. I haven't done an optional network path because as I said, if emby is sending a file to Kodi in HD that works okay, I don't think there's a need for it is there? gmjh123 2
While you're looking at the log, I just tried Emby for fire TV and exactly the same thing happened. HD will play fine, Dolby Vision fails to play
Solution ebr 15179 Posted August 30 Solution Share Posted August 30 The difference appears to be the mimetype sent for the HD one is correct (video/mkv) while the one for the DV one is incorrect (video/mp4 when it is an mkv). How was the DV file created? Is it tagged properly?
gmjh123 2
Yes you're right, now that it's correctly tagged it does play properly in Kodi. I didn't realize however, that Emby will not mark the progress of a file played in an external player. So, much as I prefer the UI of the Emby TV app I think I'll just use emby for Kodi instead of the emby Android TV app. Thanks for your time and your patience. Luke 37956
@gmjh123 Hi. Can you try searching for our standard android app (Just "Emby" on Amazon and "Emby for Android on Google) on the same device's app store and see how that compares? Thanks. gmjh123 2
Okay I'll try. But is the standard Emby Android app capable of playing an external player with the ability to remember the progress?

The problem is that there's no universal way to get that information, so we'd have to build special sauce for the specific player software that you're using. And then if you decide to use a different external player, then we have to do it again.
gmjh123 2
Okay I understand that. But maybe it could be possible to put in support for the major media players, say Kodi , VLC and MX player. then just add a note saying only those players are fully supported for registering playback progress
Luke 37956
We might actually have it for mx player if I recall correctly.

Unfortunately I never use MX player because it has no frame rate matching.
rbjtech 4584
If you want to use Kodi as an external player - then as said earlier, using the optional SMB path is the only way to get Kodi to directly play the file - if you don't do this, then emby will be sending it a 'stream' (via http) to play and that may/will strip DV/HDR info - thus introduce problems. Personally, For many years, I've never had any issues either direct playing (via SMB) or streaming (via http) any file (incl all DV profiles) using Emby for AndroidTV as a direct client. gmjh123 2
But we already established that it wouldn't send Dolby Vision because the file I was using was tagged incorrectly. SMB wasn't relevant. Since then I've also realized I can't use voice control on the emby Android TV app for pause rewinding and fast forwarding etc. I've got so used to using voice control for these commands for Kodi on Android TV that it's become essential for me. It doesn't matter if using SMB - emby just sends the UNC file path (SMB) to Kodi and kodi then attempts to play it directly - emby has nothing to do with the tagging or media identification /playback in this instance. Voice Control on Emby for AndroidTV works for Play/Pause etc - but doesn't seem to for FFWD/REWIND I agree.
