mmikiska 6 Posted August 2 Posted August 2 Hello, I have a lot of recordings originally done with Plex but am migrating over to Emby. They are all in the library and I can play them from the top level "Play Next Up" button (next to Play all) but when I try to play a specific show from next up, or when I try to play a specific show from a season, the screen basically refreshes and puts me back where I was. It seems I can play it on my laptop via the Opera Browser, but it's not working on my setup. I have an Apple TV 4k (17.5.1), Asus Lockerstor NAS (4.3.1.R752) and emby server 4.8.8.0. It does the same thing if I use my Mac Mini as the Emby Server (latest MacOS. Sorry not handy) I can provide logs but not sure what to provide. Any thoughts?

What is the app version (from the settings page)? There have been some changes recently which may resolve this in the next release. Maybe a screenshot of the page you're on would also help
mmikiska 6 Posted August 4 Author Posted August 4 It's 1.8.8 on the Apple TV. I'm not sure how to get a screenshot of an Apple TV screen or that it would tell you something. It doesn't look like it needs an update. I decided to take a video of what I'm talking about. Hope it will let me attach it here. IMG_0458.MOV
SamES 955 Posted August 4 Posted August 4 Thanks. Please try the next release when it becomes available and let me know how that compares. I can’t reproduce it, so I think it might already be fixed as part of other changes.
mmikiska 6 Posted August 4 Author Posted August 4 Do you know when the next release is coming out? Right now it's really. not usable so I'm doing Plex. We're not at Episode 1 Series 1 for most shows.

mmikiska 6 Posted November 30 Author Posted November 30 Well, finally getting back to this. Figured I'd give it a long time but.... nope. Still the same issue, with every show. I just checked and there's no update available. Any help here?

mmikiska 6 Posted November 30 Author Posted November 30 Hmmm. Playing with settings I figured out that it seems to work when I start the video with the play/pause button, but the select button in the middle of the main trackpad is where it’s not working, unless I click play all the way at the top. Hope that makes sense. On my Apple TV remote the button between mute and back is the play/pause button. The big circle button doesn’t work.

Have you tried doing this in the web app version? Selecting an item from 'Next Up' with the middle/circle button or track pad just selects that episode. So if you are on the details screen for Ep1, and you select Ep3 from the Next Up row, it shows you the details for Ep3. If you press play/pause (or long press with the circle/select button) then you can play directly from the Next Up row.
mmikiska 6 Posted December 1 Author Posted December 1 hmmm. I see, although I am surprised honestly. Does it work that way on the other platforms, like Roku? Seems like a bad design choice, really it just adds another click with no value, plus it doesn't work that way on any other Apple TV apps (that I checked). I already have the details for the episode at the bottom when I scroll through the episodes, and when I "select" it all it does is move the description for that single show to the top pane (same words) and remove the text for all the other episodes on the strip below. Not sure why that choice was made, but I expect it to just start playing the show I selected. I checked Plex, Peacock, Disney +, Hulu, Amazon, TV+, and Max. They all work the way I was expecting, so I don't think it's a limitation of the device. Thoughts?

mmikiska 6 Posted 14 hours ago Author Posted 14 hours ago Yeah, basically that’s what I think is typical. I have to admit tho it has a lot to do with what I’m used to in terms of Apple TV. In general I get the three elements and how they are used,, but in practice if I see a thumbnail and select it I just expect it to play. If you look at Amazon Prime series you’ll see a strip below the series art where you can scroll to the right to select the show you want to watch. In the Amazon metaphor it refreshes the metadata to show a quick synopsis as you go, but when you select one it plays. Peacock / Hulu you select the show, then season which plays when you select it. On all of them if you just keep scrolling you’ll end up scrolling to the next season, although I don’t know that it’s super helpful honestly. Plex is like Peacock and Hulu. Emby does both of these, except when you select the show (whether from the next up strip or season) you have to select again just to play it. There’s actually no new information showed, just requires an extra click. All of these (including Emby) work the same when you select play next (or play all I guess, but not sure why you’d use that). I imagine if you’re sitting and binging something it works, but for things like sports, news or old shows where you aren’t watching them sequentially it’s not useful. I think the industry standard on streaming devices is to play a show if you’re clicking on a thumbnail.
