Folder default view and fields?

Is there any way to set a default view and fields for every generic folder, even if only on a per-user basis (other users can be based on a template account)?

Hi, there is currently no way, although this question has come up before and improvements to this are planned for future updates. Thanks.

Glad to learn it!

Even the fact that a Home videos library always defaults to Videos and I need an extra click to get to Folders is something I'd like to change.

I take it this is not going to be on the version currently in beta? Because I'm happy to help beta test.

Have you looked at the Home Screen settings?  But yes a per user setting.

Since there is no mention of when it can be quite a while before anything is actually added.  As all changes will have to reciprocate across all clients.

Oooh, thanks for the hint! I didn't spot that one.

I hadn't realized but after looking into this under the hood, just to confirm, right now the folder display settings are transient *and* client-side, right? Absolutely nothing I can do short of distributing a userscript to every user to force the folder display to conform to my needs?

Prot,  Hi, I have noticed that there are default setting choices for new users for folder display, sorting thumbnail sizing.  Last I checked, it seemed to always start with the default and each user on a particular login with their hardware gets to choose what they prefer to see, sort by folders, sorting, thumbnail sizing, list of info to include, etc.  When that user logs in the same way, remote or local, with the same hardware, the custom choices are sticky and appear correctly.  As soon as the user uses different hardware, logs in local instead of remote, all the choices revert back to the defaults.

I assume this design choice was made so users don't get into trouble by having extra large sizes, on a desktop browser big screen login and suddenly this all looks broken when they login on mobile or a tablet.

Admin was given a way to duplicate user themes, which works for some things, but not for folder choice.  I would guess that making the folder choice sticky is a very back burner tasks, if you do Scrum in L.A. it is in the icebox.  If you really want to help make this happen, perhaps go through item by item and list what fails to get copied when an admin copies a profile.  Is it just the folder view?  I think all the info preferences for all lists are also lost.  An itemized list of what gets lost would be helpful, if the fix is ever greenlit to work on.

Hope that helps.

Client side display settings are no good. The problem is the folder display view and the fields that are displayed on folders (fields are displayed differently depending on the view). They're on local storage, which means they will be lost if you change your web browser, your device, clear your local storage, etc. This information currently doesn't go to the server at all, and the client-side javascript will send the list of fields it needs to the items endpoint every time it issues a request for folder data.

This is terrible. Every time I want to change the display to something that suits my needs, I have to use a great many clicks to change the view and to enable and disable several fields. I cannot really find a way to set any defaults, even locally, so I have to do this for every folder. But even if I could do it locally, I wouldn't be able to set defaults for my other users, which would result in an inconsistent experience for every user, creating misunderstandings and making troubleshooting difficult. If I'm adding information via plugins, I also need to make sure every user can see that information, but no one is going to bother issuing ten or fifteen clicks to reconfigure every folder on their own. The way it currently exists, the feature for changing the folder display view and associated fields is nearly useless, which seems like a waste of something that's clearly intended to be used.

I imagine this is probably another symptom of the narrow use cases people generally have in mind for the software, and how relatively unimportant support for generic folders and the home media library type seems to be.

I prefer to select films based on filename.  So, for each folder I have to select the Table view, then manually de-select the default enabled Fields, which for some reason includes unnecessary fields such as Album Artist, Composer etc
