macv 2 Posted July 25, 2024 Posted July 25, 2024 Server on Macbook Pro M1 Playback on FireTV stick 4K hotel Wifi Anyone gotten this to work? I tried internal IP, external IP, Emby Connect and none were able to find the server. It did work when at home.

As that is really the only thing that will block connections on a LAN. 15 minutes ago, macv said: external IP, Don't see external working as you will not have port forwarding via the hotel network. macv 2 Posted July 25, 2024 Author Posted July 25, 2024 Do you mean the hotel's firewall blocking port 8096? Basically no workaround?
Happy2Play 9403 Posted July 25, 2024 Posted July 25, 2024 Correct, probably not unless someone else has some ideas.
macv 2 Posted July 25, 2024 Author Posted July 25, 2024 (edited) What exactly about the vpn? I’ve used them at work but not sure what you mean w/ Emby. Edited July 25, 2024 by macv
Q-Droid 864 Posted July 25, 2024 Posted July 25, 2024 Most likely the hotel wifi is using isolation so the associated devices can't see/connect to each other. It's a security measure. The easiest and safest thing to do is get a travel router or bring along a regular router and create your own LAN. Just make sure the router supports WISP mode. I can't remember the other names for this mode.

Yep - I use a Tiny TP-Link AC750 Travel Router for this exact purpose WISP/Hotspot mode is a NAT bridge between the hotel wifi (the WAN) and your own wifi (LAN). Because this is your own LAN, there is no device isolation so you should be able to connect any device on your own wifi/lan with ease - and also share the hotels internet connection while your at it .. 16 hours ago, macv said: What exactly about the vpn? If the server was on the WAN (at your home) THEN a VPN would be the neatest solution if the hotel are blocking 8096 (unlikely tbh). 1
macv 2 Posted July 26, 2024 Author Posted July 26, 2024 (edited) I guess I misunderstood emby connect, thought it was like a GoToMyPc type of solution where it goes through the internet to make that connection. Taking a router is cool but a bit too cumbersome for me since already got a streaming stick. I will likely just ditch the stick also and pack an HDMI cable. Then just missing a nice remote, anyone have experience with ones that work w/ desktop OS's? Also, Macbooks can act as a Wifi router/AP (not sure the precise term) to have devices connect to it. As a potential feature, can we have a streaming stick connect to Macbook's wifi, then run Emby through that network? Edited July 26, 2024 by macv

That might be doable - if you can share the hotspot, then you can just connect the fireTV to that wifi. Emby needs to be aware of it however - so you may need to change the LAN settings or possibly just restart emby once the hotspot is enabled (as your macbook with then become the gateway, likely changing it's IP address.)
