mattcaz 3 Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Emby Premier works great on my Denon 7.1 AVR, but in my office I have a Roku connected over HDMI to a standard stereo TV and It refuses to play anything that is encoded with EAC3 5.1. On the TV I've selected PCM and Passthru for the audio and it doesn't make a difference. Am I missing Something? Roku settings maybe? Is there any way to get EMBY to transcode this down to say AAC 2.0? Having to use MKV tools to convert everything is a Pain in the backside. Thanks, matt caswell
Luke 39871 Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks!
speechles 2005 Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 @mattcazIt is inside the "Audio" of your Roku settings. The post above will explain what is happening. If you need more help and cannot figure it out let us know. But most of the problems are discussed in the thread above.

The issue is it's NOT Transcoding the EAC3 5.1 down to AAC 2.0 so it will play on my HDMI connected TV. It works fine when going thru my Denon HDMI 7.1 AVR. I know EMBY limits the transcoding based on the device it's sending to, or at least it used to.. is that still true? the roku audio works fine on Dolby Digital or AAC. I'm working on the logs to send in response to Luke's reply. matt
speechles 2005 Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 (edited) No. The device reports what is supports to the Emby server. In this case the Roku audio settings are read by the app and turned into a device profile which is sent to the server. Using this device profile the server can understand how to better support that exact Roku device. You need to read the exact post I put above. You want to not allow DD+ inside the CUSTOM portion of the Roku audio settings for "Digital Output Format". Uncheck DD+. Then the Roku audio settings will build a device profile which does not allow DD+ to be sent via pass-through. Please read the post above I mentioned. It will explain all of this. mattcaz 3 Posted June 29, 2024 Author Posted June 29, 2024 (edited) No matter what I select in my Roku settings, it still won't play EAC3 5.1. I'll keep using MKVTools to convert to DD 5.1 that plays just fine. Close this post, thanks for the effort to assist. matt Edited June 29, 2024 by mattcaz
speechles 2005 Posted June 29, 2024 Posted June 29, 2024 (edited) Wait.. lets start over entirely. You want to direct play the EAC3 5.1 and right now it is transcoding? You can force your Roku to support EAC3 even if your Audio equipment may not support it. On Your Roku, press HOME and follow the steps below: 1. Start at Settings 2. Move to Audio 3. Move to Preferred streaming format 4. Choose Dolby 5. Move back once to Audio 6. Move to Digital output format 7. Move to Custom 8. Move to Dolby Digital Plus and click OK 9. Move back and make sure Dolby Digital Plus is checked 10. Move back and make sure Custom is checked 11. Press Home 12. Launch Emby and it will now support full Dolby AC3 and EAC3 and EAC3 w/ATMOS (NOTE: You may have to fully restart your Roku to have these changes take effect. Some models and HDMI chains require the restart.) If you are using AUTO for Audio settings it can allow the Roku to make mistakes depending on how things are connected when it detects your audio equipment. If you tell the Audio settings which you desire it will support these immediately without having to detect them. The Emby app merely reads what the Roku has told it your Audio settings support. This is why the change must be done in the Audio settings of your Roku. Edited June 29, 2024 by speechles
mattcaz 3 Posted June 29, 2024 Author Posted June 29, 2024 (edited) Followed step by step and now the video plays, but there's no sound, and yes, the TV sound is turned up. NO errors on the tv screen. I did notice that the transcoding log shows no audio transcode.. is that normal? >>>>>> User policy for XXXXX Enable Playback Remuxing: True Enable Video Playback Transcoding: True Enable Audio Playback Transcoding: False >>>>>> Hardware Encoders for h264 [X] VideoToolbox H.264 >>>>>> Selected Codecs Decoder Automatic software decoder Edited June 29, 2024 by mattcaz

speechles 2005 Posted June 29, 2024 Posted June 29, 2024 (edited) Enable Audio Playback Transcoding: False That is the issue. Someone in your Emby user settings has disabled the right to transcode Audio. Thank you for doing this it confirms what I suspected. You are now getting Direct Play with forcing but your Audio equipment does not support it. You can go ahead and change both of those settings above on your Roku to AUTO and restart the Roku after you do this. In your Emby dashboard under when you choose Manage Server. You will see the users tab after this. Select the user you're using on the Roku. You will see the spot I have the red box around is lacking the checkmark. All you need to do is add that checkmark. That is your problem. Edited June 29, 2024 by speechles 1
Happy2Play 9405 Posted June 29, 2024 Posted June 29, 2024 Oops overlooked Audio Playback Transcoding: False. So yes the example proves device does not support EAC3.
Solution mattcaz 3 Posted June 29, 2024 Author Solution Posted June 29, 2024 OKAY.. CLOSE IT OUT. THAT FIXED IT. AUTO IN THE ROKU SETTINGS AND ENABLE AUDIO TRANSCODE IN THE EMBY USER SETTINGS. DOH.. DON'T KNOW HOW I MISSED THAT! THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND ASSISTANCE IN POINTING MY DUMB ASS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. MATT
