rodrigocn 0 Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 Hello, I'm a Plex user, but I've been trying Emby these days and it seems like a good alternative except for a few details. In the image, you can see how it's transcoding TrueHD audio to AC3 at 384Kbps. Here's where I find the first difference. This conversion could be done to FLAC since Apple TV supports it, maintaining lossless quality. That's how Plex does it. Another issue is that when selecting a PGS subtitle, it's also transcoding the video, as shown. I'm not sure of the reason, but Plex doesn't transcode in that case. Lastly, to search for a subtitle, a subscription is required, which isn't the case in Plex.
rodrigocn 0 Posted May 18, 2024 Author Posted May 18, 2024 (edited) I performed some tests and disabled transcoding for my user, it seems to be directly playing TrueHD on Apple TV. Codecs I have tested with transcoding disabled and without issues: 1080p H264 AAC AC3 TRUEHD 4K HDR 10 HEVC 4K Dolby Vision HEVC DTS-HD MA Edited May 18, 2024 by rodrigocn

Alright, I had it misconfigured and misunderstood the documentation. I can download subtitles, but from the web interface. If I purchase a subscription, is it possible to search for subtitles from the Apple TV video player like Plex does?. Regarding transcoding, it would be nice to implement a function from the server configuration panel that allows specifying which codecs to transcode to based on the client. For example, "if client = Z and codec = X then transcode to Y"
