Hi
There is a lot of problem with Emby for Apple TV app.

Missing ABC list in the library side for fast search.

Sometimes the app doesn't load the full library, I have got 1000+ movie in my library, yesterday I'm searching for Moana (in my language it called Vaiana) and the app only shows movies from 0 to L, closing the app then reopen solved this issue, but thats not a long time solution.

Sorry for said that, but I hate the new login method, I have got little kids and for them is too complicated if last time I watched something (changing user) the old method after app opening shows the users, then they choose the correct user and watch what they want

This one is somewhat annoying as you cannot jump to a specific letter within your library if you are looking for a special movie or series I want to watch. Just so, I have more than 3400 Titles in my Anime library and it is really annoying to scroll forever to get to a specific letter.

Please be so kind and add the letter secionts on the left or right side to make it easier to jump within a library!

Well, this one is really annoying! This happens always when I sort the library i.E. with "Premiered" or "Added on" or "Last added episode". The app does not show ALL titles within a library, mostly only 1/4 of the titles. Thats not good and should be changed asap.

Also there are some things for the settings which are missing:

Please add the setting to change how many seconds you want to jump forward or backwards wenn scrolling while playing. At the moment you can jump only 10 seconds forward or backwards. This should be possible to change within the settings.

I think it appears like after you start scrolling down iirc.  But yes the appletv app is worthless doesn’t support Dolby vision either.

no, only if I push and hold the down button, some dot appers in the side, where the ABC could be, but if is release the button disappears again

Strangely the iPadOS version works really well on Apple TV when side loaded. Problem is it only works for 7 days then apple remove it, unless you have a paid developer account. Can we not just get the iPadOS version to replace TvOS? It’s the same on Android as well. Android version works far better on Android TV compared to the Android TV version…

maybe, I'm not an apple expert to make it

now I'm switched back to Plex, waiting for the Emby for tv update

Hi, are you saying you're able to run our iPad app on your Apple TV?

Hi, don't you want a personal media server and not one that puts your information into the cloud?

Luke, that's a point for Emby, but at this time the Emby for tv app is not good enough, not loading every item from the library while browsing 7 times out of 10, only show 0-F or 0-L, the ABC for fast search is really missing.

I love Emby, its beautiful, but one point for Plex is loads for everything 10 times out of 10

but one point for Emby is, Plex with Apple TV (last generation with ethernet) couldn't play dolby vision mp4 files directly

Hi Luke,

I was able to by sideloading as a developer and removing device restrictions in Sideloadly.

But as a basic developer, it only lasted 7 days.

Cheers

@LukeKinda love that you said this.  My wife has been encouraging me to finally drop it for over a year... but the AppleTV app is the final piece of that puzzle.  I got premier the day I started exploring Emby as an option as I knew it would eventually become our media server.  Other things about the app I can absolutely deal with, as I know you all are working constantly to improve it... and OMG the product has come such a long way since I started 2 years ago, but the user app switching on AppleTV is where we get lost.  We have... some... content... that I don't necessarily want my kids to go exploring in.  My Living Room TV is shared and I absolutely cannot for the life of me remember to force close the app when I rarely get the chance to use the TV. The other stuff like alpha pickers and lyric support are like to haves, but not deal breakers in my house.  Just the user switching.  I think you all have done a great job with mpv and the UX of the Apple TV.  Every release I cross my fingers for user switching. :D

On a side note... hiding content from the home screen is a nice to have as well ;)

yeah, eomby is pretty good looking, but has got some things that makes it unusable on some hardware

- login method is too difficult for younger or older users
- missing ABC sidebar in Emby for (Apple) TV app
- not loading every content every time on apple tv

- movie version handle is look really better than Plex, but difficult to choose between the versions, if the user know about it (and if I setting up the versions not grouped together, its harder, because nothing tag/mark/anything show me which is which

-on Apple TV, the subtitles are too small, and can't change the size

but on the other hand

- emby can handle automatically the content sharing if you have only 1-1 library

- can play dovi mp4 on apple tv

- cloudless (but Plex can be too if I switched of the remote play and can be self hosted too like emby)

I don´t think it is necessary to discuss about wether to use emby or plex in this thread.

Just to get this summarized, it would be cool if the following features/bugs could be recognized within a future update for the apple tv app:

  • Add the Character Column on the left/right side while scrolling through a media library
  • Add the support for playing the tv-themes/movie-themes in the background

  • Fix: When sorting by specific options (last added, premiered on, last added episode) not ALL items within a library are being shown

That would be all I think which was discussed in this thread.

@Lukemaybe there is a specific location where I can place these requests/bugs? If yes, please let me know and I´ll do so.

Hi, we generally suggest one topic per request or issue. It just makes it easier for everyone to know what they're looking at when they click into the thread.

Other than that you're in the right place. Thanks !

Let's not miss that you can't shuffle all songs because the music section doesn't have a "Songs" tab.  You can go to an artist or album and shuffle their content, but not just shuffle all songs in the library...

@Lukein regards to the Apple TV app.

I see you always mention you are trying to ‘catch it up’ to the other clients.

Is the end goal to have the app essentially indistinguishable from, say for example, ’Emby for Android’ on a Nvidia shield (which looks incredible btw)?

Yes that is the goal.

@SamES The alphabetical quick search feature was actually my next request to ya, but I see it's already posted here.. I am including an image of what I think this thread is talking about & what I'm talking about anyway from the Emby web version.

Its not a show-stopper for me since I push the use of Genres as the default movies tab (TYVM again for fixing btw, I can't wait for that update to go out), but this search method is still a nice feature to have. 😁

abc.png.1f0621156532051077d4a93b71de7c36.png < Missing on Apple TV 🙁

The other issue posted here (yeah its hard to follow two issues in one post) where titles don't load isn't that big of an big issue for me (local network anyway, I have not tested with an external connection). I have noticed scrolling down the movies list very fast fast pauses every few letters but only for a fraction of a second to populate more titles (for me / ATV 4&5th gen). I believe that's what is being talked about. But I've seen that on Roku too. I would think its just easier for the system to load a hand-full of titles as you scroll rather than all at once. When I use search prior to scrolling down my whole movies list it still finds movies such as "Zathura" prior to loading the full movies list for me anyway. That's just my experience with this SO-FAR anyway. 🤷‍♂️

You really like the UX of the Apple TV? I WANT to use emby on Apple TV, but I just can't because of how bad the look is. Sorry devs, I know it's hard work and it's really appreciated.

When did you last check it?  What part of the UX don't you like?

I actually love the interface. My wife comments on how easy it is to find things and navigate it.  Collections on the Home Screen and live tv access is great. Plex is too much searching/fumbling with collapsing side menus and such. With that being said, the inability to easily change users is a dead stop.  Everything else functions well enough, or better than plex, in my opinion.

I used it earlier today. I don't want to sound like I'm bashing it, I know it's a lot of hard work. There are just small things that I feel would make it look better, but I may be in the minority.

I'm not a fan of the gray background. It is kind of an "apple tv" look, but for a media center I think black or dark charcoal color would look better.

The layout of the home screen looks good and also the grid of movies/tv series is fine. It's the details screens that seem weird to me. It seems like it's common practice now with media to leave part of the next row (below) showing so the user knows it's there, I guess I don't understand why though. Most users will instictively push down to see if there is anything there. Which leads to why I don't like it.  On the movie screen, the top part is absolutely beautiful. But that should be the whole screen imo. Seeing the tops of the heads of the actors is distracting and just looks off. If having that indication for the user to scroll down is something that needs to be there, maybe lower that gray bar so you can only see "Cast & Crew". And then when the user does scroll down have that row (gray bar) come up to just above where it currently is (so the entire images can be seen). That way it isn't covering up the beautiful part at the top. Seems like chapters should be above cast, but maybe that's how all Emby apps are.

It's kind of the same in TV shows. I feel like the whole "Next Up" row should be visible when you open a series. Currently it shows the entire thumb, and just a tiny bit of the title. Why not show it all? I think the best look for tv shows though is having a season bar and then the episode thumbs below that all on the main screen with no 1/2 of the next row showing. The user can go down to seasons and episodes without the screen scrolling at all. If the user wanted to see "cast" or "more shows like this", they could scroll down, but it wouldn't be taking up space on the screen.  The seasons bar would also eliminate the need for a seasons poster row.

Again, this is just my opinion and doesn't really mean much. Everyone has their own idea of what looks good to them. I'm grateful for the hard work that goes in Emby.

That's great. I agree, the functionality of it is good and easy to get where you want to go. For me it's more the way the details screens look and scroll and where things are placed. Maybe I was commenting on the wrong thing. 🤷‍♂️
