Storing and Editing Person Metadata as .NFO Files Not Working

Hi there,

The new 4.8.3.0 version has changed its old method to store person metadata as .nfo files (previously stored in emby-server/metadata/people/... along with person's images, now there are only images, I don't find any person's NFOs anywhere). I have ticked the "Enable reading and writing of person metadata files" option in "Library-Advanced" page, and try to upload an NFO file into "people/x/xx" path myself, and by refreshing metadata, sometimes the info for this person could be updated with this NFO file, but mostly doesn't work. Moreover, whatever change I made in emby's webpage for person's info, it wouldn't update into this NFO file I created myself.

Since I have a lot of self-made media in emby and I would really like to edit any media info myself, including those Tiktok Talents and Youtubers' information, I do miss the old way to store and edit those information in an NFO file that I CAN FIND.

My guess is that you've adjusted the person metadata's storage path and hide it-just like jellyfin, and one may change it by refreshing an NFO file or directly editing in the webpage, but what I really need is an AVAILABLE NFO FILE. Just leave an option to allow me store those person metadata as a reachable nfo file would be great.

Thanks for your time and taking this into consideration!

My Environment:

Emby server(4.8.3.0) for macOS(14.4.1), application has full disk access permission.

Hi, now that you've done this, just open the metadata editor for a person, click save, and that should get an nfo file created. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

Hi Luke,

What you suggest worked well before I upgraded to 4.8.3.0 version, but it no longer works now.

The current metadata folder on my mac is "Macintosh HD\Users\username\.config\emby-server\metadata\people", which is not the same as older versions, and no NFO file changes or pops up as I edit a person's metadata. That's why I thought this was a feature change.

So maybe my problem is a bug or troubleshooting issue, I'll try reinstall the server again or change a platform and I'll come back to report any update.

Reinstalled emby server but still nothing changed. I edited one person’s info by clicking the pencil icon, but nothing popped up in the metadata folder. Maybe I should try another platform to confirm if it’s Mac’s problem.

Logs will be good to see if there are any errors or something else preventing Emby from writing the file.

Here’s the log file, which has a lot. 🤣 And I just realize I have an error starting tray icon. The later part shows the process I edited a person info.

BTW, should this post be moved to troubleshooting section?

Can you enable debug logs too and retry the refresh? Post the logs after that.

It does seem to be running the NFO provider, but I don't see any attempt to save it.

2024-04-05 01:10:45.786 Debug App: Running PersonNfoProvider for 吳夢夢

It could be due to no change in the metadata, so can you try actually changing a field value and saving it?

I did change some fields and clicked save , and refreshed again this time.

So it's definitely trying to read NFO metadata but doesn't seem to be writing anything:

2024-04-05 01:24:00.109 Debug App: Running PersonNfoProvider for 吳夢夢
2024-04-05 01:24:00.109 Debug App: PersonNfoProvider returned no metadata for 吳夢夢

I don't see any errors too, so someone else or Luke will need to look into it and see why no write is happening.

My guess now, is it might be a PERMISSION issue in which I try to write into hidden folder, which is the same situation as I used jellyfin. Previously emby’s metadata was stored in “~/Users/username/emby-server/metadata”, which was a Non-hidden folder, but now it has changed to”~Users/username/.config/emby-server/metadata”, which is a hidden folder.

Don’t know if it matters. But thank you anyway.

How did you configure the options for the library?

Don't know if this related to this topic, but might be. Every time I edit an actor profile, either the information or image, the episode they are in duplicates.

Also I checked to see if maybe the nfo info was incorrect and went to save location (E:\Emby Server\Metadata\people) to this actor folder and it dose not appear in this location.

Please disregard my post above. I believe this a different problem altogether.

You gave me a hint, so I changed the metadata location to a manual path and refreshed all metadatas, but nothing was there either.

Yeah the problem I have is different then yours I think.

I created new topic about it.

However I can say that any changes I make to actor profiles (image or info) are not being saved to Metadata\people as far as I can tell.

Currently don't appear to see nfo files updating/changing in /metadata/people but images are updated.

Here is a quick example the existing nfo never is missing info by just enable the option in Library-Advanced.  But Refresh or manual save does not update nfo.  At least in my testing. @Luke
