Cannot play MKV after latest Emby Server upgrade

Well, notified by Emby server that a new version is available. App Center doesn't show it but the notes say it is usually behind.

 

I made the mistake of manually installing it.

I can no longer play any video files that are .mkv (of all the ones I've tried so far). .mp4 still play fine.

None of the transcoding settings per user seem to have been lost by the server upgrade so I'm not sure why this would happen.

(Note they still play fine directly using VLC or Windows Media Player on Windows or on Android phone. On either of those Emby clients though, no dice.)

 

Is there a repository where I can download the old .apk and downgrade to a workinbg version?

Luke and company will want to see the logs, as they may yield what is going on, so I'd wait for them to chime in before taking any action, but...

Are the MP4s in the same location as the MKVs?  Just trying to figure out if it is an access problem.

Another thing is that your clients may be able to direct play MP4s but not MKVs and there's a problem with transcoding (e.g., problems with ffmpeg).

I run into weird problems sometimes—though not like this—when using App Central and the manual install method if I do not first shut down Emby in the server dashboard and then do so in App Central—usually some sort of zombie process.  If you are not comfortable using the command line/terminal, what you can try is to restart your NAS and see if that resolves the problem (if you haven't already done so).

If that doesn't work, a simple uninstall and reinstall might remedy the problem—uninstall from App Central and then install the version you downloaded from Emby's website, which will be more up to date.

Finally, if that doesn't work, your only recourse might be a fresh install.  Check this topic for instructions I posted on how to do that.

Hi!

 

Yes, all videos in the same directory. Access is not the issue. 

The clients played .mkv and .mp4 before the upgrade.

NAS has been restarted several times due to physical movement requiring the power lead to have to be plugged in a different socket, then unplugged to mount NAS in a cage under my desk etc 

I'm always reluctant uninstall/reinstall in case settings get lost though in this case Emby Server upgrade essentially does that so clean install may help, but always feels like a cop-out to me

I find it strange that it will play via DLNA but not the Emby client. Windows Emby gives the same playback error.

Even more strangely, although I get this error, I can hear the audio stream is being played. Just cannot see the video.

If I click "Got it!", it moves directly to the next episode and generates the same error - but plays the audio for the new track.

The devs/mods may have a better idea from the logs, but out of curiosity, what happens if you click "allow video transcoding...?"

Well then I get all sorts of transcoding delays, pauses, stuttering etc. 

I turned those options off on Luke's (I think) advice in another thread.

I upgraded the NAS hardware to get NAS GPU hardware transcoding, but that made no difference until I changed these options.
