If you select Playback Correction twice in the OSD, do the colors look better?

Is the device connected directly to the TV, or is the AVR in the middle?

avr and syncbox in the middle but i've taken the syncbox out and that made no change. avr is not that recent, yamaha ysp2500.

yes it works fine then. although there is still inconsistency in what is reported on the OSD, SFN and on the dashboard

Your SFN though isn't reporting HDR playback capability.  Shouldn't it say under Playback Info "HDR support: HDR10" if it did?

Yeah, that's what I was looking for.

Not sure why it isn't transcoding.  You don't have any transcode options disabled, right?

Yeah, looking at the TV logic, I don't think we ever put the transcode logic in for video range.  So that explains at least that much of it.

could this be due to upscaling settings onthe shield?

Just for testing purposes, did you try turning this off to see if it has an impact?

as far as i can see its not possible to turn it off. i previously had it set to AI Enhanced where the movie direct played - setting it to basic, which seems to be the lowest level, makes no difference. it still direct plays

ok, this is solved. by comparison with another user it was clear that i did not have the shield setting for "match content colour space" enabled. once enabled the shield does the proper tonemapping
