I can confirm that there are also some Problems with (Default-ASS) subtitles. Sometimes I can manage to show up the subs by move forward and backwards but most times they just wanna show up. I opened the small Nerd Menu and there the Subs are shown. If you need some more information I can provide some stuff.

Can you start this issue as a new thread?  The ass implementation is different so it will need a new investigation and I’m concerned it will get lost in this thread.

@FrostByte, maybe it’s easier to just move this post to a new thread. Thanks.

Can you provide the media info for an example and server/ffmpeg logs from a playback?  Thanks

Today I decided to give it another try. I started my episode and waited some time. The Subs didn’t show up, then I disabled the subs and enabled them a few seconds after that, rewind the episode and waited some seconds. The subs did show up bit the screen was flickering and jumping forward and backwards. It is absolutely not possible to watch an episode under that circumstances. Maybe that helps you for finding the issue.

Tested the new 1.4.2 today.
Nothing has changed so far.

No, not yet.  It's on my list.

What model is your TV?

Can you try playing a video with ASS subs and wait at least 60 seconds without skipping?  Do the subs start showing automatically after a long delay?  If so, how long before they show?

My TV is an SAMS GQ-55Q6F

I tried it today and as you said the subs started playing normally at around 2 Minutes. The first sub flickered for one moment but then they show up normally. After I pressed the skip intro button it will take some time again for them to show up regularly.

The library we use for supporting ass subtitles can take a small time to load depending on your TV's capabilities, but I wouldn't expect it to take more than about 15-20 seconds.

Can you please attach or PM the .ass file and I'll test it?

Is the TV on the same network as the server, or is it remote?  What hardware is your server running on?

I'm seeing some fairly long response times which might indicate an issue

Hey Sam

Here is the .ass File you asked for and it's the same File I tested this Morning.

My TV is on the same Network as my Homeserver and it's conntected via GB Ethernet.
My Server is running Unraid as the OS and Emby as a Docker Container (Latest Version 4.7.8.0)

Hardware: AMD Ryzen 1500X, 16GB Ram, Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. B450M DS3H V2, Nvidia Quadro P400, Enought Space, and also connected with GB Ethernet.

I don't really think that the Hardware is the Problem here. I also tested the Subs with other Mediasoftware like Plex and Jelly and there was no Problem so far.
Also tested it with the Emby Client on the Apple TV and there was also no Problem.

Also attached the newest Emby Log.

What language do you have set in the filename?

Try it with 'ger' like 'Food Wars.ger.ass'

Refresh the metadata for the program before trying playback

The .ass is packed within the .mkv and is not external.
I extracted the .ass just for the Forum here.
I also attached you a picture of the MKV in MKVmerge how it looks there.

Can you show me the Media info at the bottom of the details screen on the server?

Maybe try it as an external ass renamed like SamES mentioned above to see if it works any better than internal

The issue us the language detection.  For certain languages we use the internal fonts, for other we download them and this is causing the delayed start.  We need to know how it is being detected.

Is there anything I can do here to help you out?

I need it from the server as I want to see how the server has extracted the detail.

You can also try this.  Extract the stream as an external sub file and name it the same as the source file with .ger.ass as an extension

Refresh the metadata and try selecting this external track and see if it's better

That's from the Server, or am I mission something?
I will also do as you said and extract the .ass, rename it and give it a try

Sorry for double Posting, but I extracted and renamed the Sub as you said and refreshed the Metadata.
With the new external Sub it takes about 5-10 Seconds to let the subs start.

Also I'm not completely sure about the Style of the Subs, normally they should have a light black Shadow but on Emby they have a large thick black Shadow.

OK, this is good.  Next step is to understand what the server is reporting to the client.  I think the easiest way is going to be for me to test the file.  Are you able to provide a link via PM where I can download this file?

Is this only a problem for the subs when it is external, or also a problem when the internal ones start as well?  Unfortunately TV's don't have a lot of processing power and ass subs can be complex.  This might just be a limitation of how they are being rendered.
