Green pixelated mess when playing a particular movie

I gathered this data from for a friend that was having problems a few weeks ago but forgot to post it. :)

Whenever he plays Infinity War (4K version), the screen is a static, green, pixelated mess and doesn't change. If I play the movie on my side, it's fine. Any idea why the Samsung app is choking?

He can play other 4K content from me without a problem.

Part of the issue I believe is that it's transcoding video and audio.  Samsung TVs don't support PGS or TrueHD.  If you want it to direct play click the down arrow and choose a text based subtitle like srt and an audio track like AC3 before clicking Play.

Could this be the bitrate doubling also?

"Bitrate":51507685

Does lowering the in-app quality make a difference?

Guessing this will be a factor also.

Warning: Hardware-accelerated subtitle-overlay is disabled due to diagnostic option
Info Tone Mapping would be desired, but hardware tone mapping is disabled

This was the fix, thanks! Video is playing perfectly now.

That's more of a workaround. Can you try the suggested steps that I gave as well as happy2play? Thanks.

How is selecting audio and subtitle tracks beforehand which the Samsung TV supports a workaround?   That TV doesn't support PGS or TrueHD.  I would say transcoding is a workaround.  It will definitely look better and sound better when direct playing vs transcoding.

Well because what if he actually wanted those tracks? Direct play is always preferable, but it should still work with transcoding as well.

Ok, I guess if someone values PGS sub quality over the picture quality that would be true.  The TrueHD audio track though is being converted to AC3 on the fly anyway so might as well select AC3 (if there is one) before clicking Play.

Ya, you're right it should still work and we should try and solve that.

Wired or Wireless as TV's only have 100Mb nics correct?

Without Direct play it would be washed out.

@Luke I emailed my friend asking him to re-test and will post the logs as soon as he does. My server is now on 4.7.6.0.

@Happy2Play He's hardwired and yes, his TV's NIC is capped at 100Mbps. Watching the traffic from my system, when he's playing a 4K stream, it will be a consistent 100Mbps on the upload (I have 1 gig symmetrical) and sometimes spiking into the 120Mbps range and he does have buffering every now and then but some 4K movies are fine. Because of his network setup, he can only use a hard wire on this TV. Some day, maybe he'll get a better wifi setup and hook some TV box to this TV that can do 802.11AX :)

@gene0915 Don't know TV app settings but would have him set a max of 80 or 100Mb quality on the client as current settings exceed capabilities as it is set to, or Auto is defaulting to 120Mbps.

VideoBitrate=119616000&AudioBitrate=384000

@Luke@Happy2Play

My friend carried out the requested tests and here's his reply:

9:10pm
Audio: TrueHD 7.1
Subtitles: English Forced
Result: Spinning light, then fails

9:14pm
Audio: TrueHD 7.1
Subtitles: English Forced
Home Network Quality: 60 Mbps 1080p
Result: Spinning light, then fails

9:17pm
Audio: TrueHD 7.1
Subtitles: English Forced
Home Network Quality: 100 Mbps 4K
Result: Spinning light, then fails

.....and here are the logs:

(Server is 4.7.6.0 on a Debian 11.4 system.)

Thanks!

Devs will have to look at this but to me it suggests HWA and PGS subtitle issues.

Have you tested changing from vaapi to quicksync (decoder/ecoder)?

Also tested disabling HWA?

also to @Luke (Sorry, life has been getting in the way of troubleshooting this :) )

So, for switching to QuickSync, do I uncheck the VAAPI boxes or just moving QS on top is enough to change it?

Either as you accomplish the same thing.

Testing complete. With Quick Sync active, he just saw black and white boxes, no video.

With hardware acceleration turned off, video played fine.

Devs will have to look at this further as it appears SW fallback is not happening on HW failure.

21:17:20.038 Error while filtering: Cannot allocate memory
21:17:20.039 Error while decoding stream #0:0: Cannot allocate memory
21:17:20.039 Error marking filters as finished
21:17:20.130 Conversion failed!

Yes, my friend is still having the same problem. Happy mentioned that the devs might need to figure out why software fallback isn't working.
