    Overview: Metadata and layers

Dolby Vision metadata and layer structures describe the information available to reconstruct and adapt the intended picture.

The RPU carries metadata, while base and enhancement layers have their own roles in the coded signal. MEL and FEL describe different enhancement-layer arrangements. These distinctions help identify which information a particular playback or processing path receives and how that differs from simply detecting a Dolby Vision tag.

    • Dolby Vision RPU metadata
The Dolby Vision RPU carries metadata used to interpret and manage the picture during playback.

    • Dolby Vision base and enhancement layers
Dolby Vision can use a base video layer alone or combine it with an enhancement layer and associated metadata.

    • Dolby Vision MEL and FEL
MEL and FEL distinguish Dolby Vision enhancement layers with no picture residual from layers that carry additional reconstruction information.
