    Overview: DNS and naming

DNS and hostname conventions connect service names and URLs with the addresses used in a particular network view.

The same name can resolve differently inside and outside a home network. Dynamic DNS and split DNS address different relationships between that name and its changing or scoped addresses. These pages also distinguish the hostname from the rest of a URL, which includes the scheme, port and resource path.

    • DNS
DNS resolves typed questions about names through authoritative data and caches, with address answers providing only one stage of a server connection.

    • Dynamic DNS
Dynamic DNS updates a name’s address records when the represented endpoint changes, while caches and the actual inbound network path retain independent lifetimes.

    • Split DNS
Split DNS supplies different answers for a name under different resolver views, allowing one server hostname to select local and external endpoints without changing its other URL components.

    • Hostnames and URLs
A server URL combines scheme, host, optional port and resource path, while hostname resolution and relative-reference rules determine distinct later selections.
