    Overview: Photo metadata standards

Photo metadata standards describe capture details, editorial information and extensible properties around an image.

Exif, IPTC Photo Metadata and XMP serve related but distinct purposes. A photograph can carry more than one of these representations, with overlapping information that an application must interpret. Their pages explain the field context needed to understand dates, authorship, location and other image properties.

    • Exif
Exif specifies image-associated capture and presentation records, including camera information, capture-time context, orientation and applicable location data.

    • IPTC Photo Metadata
IPTC Photo Metadata defines descriptive and contextual photo properties whose meanings remain distinct from their XMP, legacy or other storage representations.

    • XMP
XMP defines an extensible metadata model and RDF/XML serialization whose namespaced properties can be embedded in resources or carried in associated sidecars.
