    Overview: Container metadata structures

Container metadata structures attach descriptive information to media through the container's own elements and conventions.

MP4 atoms and Matroska tags provide different places and structures for metadata. A familiar field name in an inspection tool can conceal those storage differences. This group explains the underlying container representation, which helps when information survives one remuxing or editing operation differently from another.

    • MP4 metadata atoms
MP4 metadata uses structured boxes and metadata conventions whose keys, payload types and scope must be interpreted separately from the coded media streams.

    • Matroska tags
Matroska tags associate named values with specified targets such as tracks or the broader resource, retaining scope, language and default-value relationships.
