    Overview: HDMI connections

HDMI video transport relates the chosen signal to link modes, bandwidth and cable capabilities.

A connector's shape does not establish the whole link's capacity. TMDS and FRL describe transport arrangements, and cable categories have their own capability meaning. This group connects those terms to the signal being carried rather than deriving a supported mode from an HDMI label alone.

    • HDMI video transport
HDMI video transport carries a selected presentation signal between source and sink, with accompanying audio and signaling distinct from the compressed media delivered to the player.

    • HDMI link bandwidth: TMDS and FRL
HDMI link bandwidth depends on the selected timing, sample format and TMDS or FRL transport arrangement rather than on the movie’s compressed bitrate.

    • HDMI cable categories
HDMI cable categories identify tested transport capabilities and certification scopes, independently of the features implemented by connected devices.
