    Overview: HDR and brightness

HDR display behavior relates supported signal interpretation to brightness control across a picture and over time.

A peak-brightness figure does not describe every area of every scene. Local dimming and automatic brightness limiting address different spatial or power relationships, while HDR capability includes supported signal handling. These topics make the displayed light behavior more precise than one advertised number.

    • HDR display capabilities
HDR display capability combines accepted signal formats with the display’s usable luminance, contrast, color reproduction and processing behaviour.

    • Local dimming
Local dimming adjusts illumination in backlight regions so an LCD can use different light levels across the same picture.

    • Display peak brightness
Display peak brightness is a luminance result that needs a defined picture area, duration, mode and measurement context.

    • Automatic brightness limiting
Automatic brightness limiting reduces permitted display output as picture loading reaches the implementation’s power or drive constraints.
