    Overview: Object-based audio formats

Object-based audio carries spatial information that a renderer uses to adapt sound to a listening arrangement.

Objects describe sound and placement information beyond a fixed channel assignment. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X apply that idea through particular delivery and rendering systems. Their pages distinguish the carried spatial information from the codec and output transport used to reach the renderer.

    • Object-based audio
Object-based audio combines sound components with metadata that a renderer uses to place them for the listening system.

    • Dolby Atmos
Dolby Atmos uses channel and object information to render an immersive soundtrack for a supported playback arrangement.

    • DTS:X
DTS:X uses spatial audio information to render a soundtrack for the playback system rather than one fixed speaker count.
