crusher11 1101 Posted July 15, 2021 Posted July 15, 2021 Direct Plays just fine on the LG TV, and half a dozen other identically-encoded files all play just fine on the Shield as well. I tried to play it, it stuck on a black screen with the blue spinning circle for 5-10 minutes, then Direct Streamed due to a direct play error. I was going to send a client log but I accidentally backed out and now I just get the black screen for a couple of seconds and then it throws me back to the item details screen. Log includes the successful (but very delayed) playback on the Shield, a few failed attempts on the Shield, and a successful playback on the LG. embyserver.txt
crusher11 1101 Posted July 15, 2021 Author Posted July 15, 2021 Managed to get it to play again, sent a client log...not sure how that works though.

crusher11 1101 Posted July 15, 2021 Author Posted July 15, 2021 One assumes it's simply in a pile of logs or something, though?

ebr 16169 Posted July 15, 2021 Posted July 15, 2021 It is throwing out of memory errors. Is this a Shield tube? Can you try setting your buffer size in the settings to "small"?

Carlo 4560 Posted July 15, 2021 Posted July 15, 2021 You could try to power cycle the device to see if that helps at all.
crusher11 1101 Posted July 16, 2021 Author Posted July 16, 2021 This has been a problem for several days, I've turned the Shield on and off a bunch of times in that period.

Are you still running Emby server on your Shield Pro ? Although it should be capable of running either Emby server or Plex server, it might be better to use it as a client-only device. You have Emby server on your NAS don't you? 1
crusher11 1101 Posted July 16, 2021 Author Posted July 16, 2021 My server has only ever been on my NAS (except the Windows server I had before I got a NAS in the first place). I had a brief play with the Android server when I got the Shield, but I never actually set it all up. I've since uninstalled the server app from the Shield.
Luke 42077 Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 Can you try our standard android app on the same device and let us know how that compares? https://emby.media/emby-for-android.html Thanks.

crusher11 1101 Posted July 16, 2021 Author Posted July 16, 2021 It direct streams. Much, much quicker than on the Shield app though.

crusher11 1101 Posted August 10, 2021 Author Posted August 10, 2021 It should direct play through both apps, but it's direct streaming. And it's taking several minutes to commence playback on the Android TV app.

If not, then it will only ever stream via the Emby server. There's always been a misconception with Direct Play/Stream in the Emby eco-system. But anyway, what does Stats For Nerds say it's doing?

If the file is not mounted on the Shield's file system it's delivered using http, if the device can play it, the file is not altered, it is simply delivered using http. I understand this is direct play. We can’t call this direct streaming. The difference is that using http, Emby is involved in the distribution, but if the file is mounted locally, Emby is not involved. But in both cases the playback is direct (you are playing the original file)
crusher11 1101 Posted August 10, 2021 Author Posted August 10, 2021 All my other identically-encoded files Direct Play just fine.

It has always been a bone of contention with Emby. As long as it plays and you can pause, FF and RW, then does it really matter

With that same logic you could say it isn't direct play if the storage isn't physically connected to the device. All of these are protocols for delivering the data. If the data isn't being altered in any way, then it is direct playing that data.
