Currently on 4.6.4.0, Windows version. All my shows, Castle, Futurama, Star Trek Enterprise, Family Guy, etc have been jumping around like crazy when it attempts to play the next episode. I have this problem with Kodi and it's up next plugin *and* with Emby Theater.

All the episodes have already been watched, so maybe that is part of the problem.

For example, I just watched Castle S01E01 and when it finished it wanted to play S03EXX (I don't remember exactly the episode number). I started S01E01 again, skipped to the end to let it next up again, and this time, it wanted S04E01 (Both these tests were in Kodi). I went ahead and tried the web browser, started S01E01, skipped to the end, and it wanted to play S06E23.

I don't remember when this problem started, but it has been around at least 1 update, maybe more.

What is the logic to determine the next episode to play? Are there options to just play the next episode in order? Maybe it's trying to play them based on some other status and that's the problem?

Hi if you look at the series, were all the in between episodes played?

Yes, every episode in the these series have been watched/marked as played.

I haven't watched anything new in a while. I'll try tomorrow and see if it skips around on unwatched episodes.

Hi.  If all the items have been marked watched then our next up will not show anything for that series - as there is nothing new to watch.  I cannot speak to exactly how Kodi handles this.

One other wrinkle could be if you have resume points in some episodes.  If you do, then one of those episodes would show in the new "Continue Watching" row as it is resumable.

Yes, the continue watching, aka playing the next episode at the end of the previous episode is what I'm referring to. Maybe it is resume points messing that up.

Not sure when the logic changed, but I thought this worked differently, aka the way I expected it, before.

Maybe there needs to be an option for the continue watching to play the next episode in the series. Next Episode, Next Unwatched Episode, Next In Progress or something along those lines.

I'll see about nuking resume positions and see if that changes what I'm seeing.

Hi.  "Continue watching" is not the feature of playing episodes in sequence.  That is the feature "Auto queue next episode" and it will play the items in the episode order (the same order they display in the interface).  Unless, of course, you did something like shuffle play.

I think we need to back up and have you explain an example of exactly what you did and what happened.

Thanks.

I use either Emby Theater, Emby for the Web, or Kodi (all 3 experience the same issue. For Kodi I'm using the Kodi Next Gen and Up Next, or Next Up, don't remember). I play an episode. At the end, when you get the popup that counts down the time to play the next episode automatically (the popup that is on the screen while the current video is still playing) plays the wrong episode.

I have experience this with Stargate Atlantis, Castle, Star Trek Enterprise, Futurama, Family Guy (these are my background shows, things I put in the background for mostly noise). If I am watching S01E01 (like with Castle) then I expect S01E02 to be the next episode that starts playing automatically and not S03EXX or S04E01 like it is currently doing.

The one thing in common is that all of these seasons have *no* unwatched items in it. They have all be watched.

Posted

Hi.  Are you positive the issue is occurring anywhere other than Kodi...?

100% positive it happens with Emby Theater (Windows Client) and Emby for the Web (using Edge, Chromium version)

and Emby for the Web

Can we please look at a specific example of that?

It is definitely the resume position/last played (maybe a combo of most recent episode that has a resume position) that is influencing the next episode that'll be played.

I started S06E23 of Castle with Emby for the Web and stopped it. Then I went and started S01E01 of Castle (again, Emby for the Web), skipped to almost the end and when it showed me the next episode it was going to play, it was S06E23.

I can see how some might expect that to be S06E23, some might expect it to be S01E02, and some might expect it to be SXXEXX where that is the next unwatched (meaning 0 resume but unwatched).

So, maybe there needs to be options:

  1. Next Episode
  2. Next Unwatched
  3. Next In Progress (or something like that, or maybe not even this)

Edit: Do you need logs or anything? I looked at the logs, and they didn't tell much. Maybe upping the log level or something? Just let me know.

From the standpoint of the auto-queue functionality, s1e2 was the proper episode.  Can you provide the server log from when you did that and the times that you did each of them?

I restarted and got a clean log.

embyserver-63761356862.txt

2021-07-08 15:58:52.844 Info SessionManager: Playback start reported by app Emby Web 4.6.4.0 playing Flowers for Your Grave. Started at 0 ms
2021-07-08 16:00:26.869 Info SessionManager: Playback start reported by app Emby Web 4.6.4.0 playing For Better or Worse. Started at 0 ms

S01E01 = Flowers for Your Grave
S06E23 = For Better or Worse

I then unmarked S01E09 as played, restarted Emby and did the same test. Playing S01E01 it still wanted to play S06E23. I exited back to the screen and clicked the "Play Next Up" button and it played S03E06. The log file does not contain these tests, just the initial test mentioned above.

Everything looks correct in that log.  When you view this series/season in the UI, all the shows display in the proper order?

Yup, everything in the UI is in the proper order. Any types of queries, either thru SQLite or thru postman I can run to help troubleshoot? I wish the code was still open, then I'd go look and troubleshoot myself.

To me this sounds like it's working correctly based on what you said ealier

That's not how auto queue should work.  Auto queue should play episodes in order regardless of watched status.  The query in his log looks correct.  It is like the default sort order is somehow coming back out of order.  Luke will have to take a look.

Posted (edited)

Because s06e23 is partially played. Kodi must not be building a queue really when playing episodes. It must be at the end of playback looking for the most appropriate thing to do next. Since it sees s06e23 as partially played it will become the next after anything has played. Once that gets played fully Kodi will probably start to random the next one. It doesn't look like Kodi builds a queue but rather after playback then gets the next episode to play each time.

But if you say Theater is doing this too. That should be queue and not look for next after playback.

It also could be the Trakt plugin throwing wrenches into things. You might try with Trakt disabled and see where that gets you. Maybe Trakt is the culprit?

If I run the following query, I notice that the results are not sorted (or are, but defaulting to alpha sort) and that S06E23 is the next item after S01E01:
http://emby.mydomain/emby/Shows/86171/Episodes?UserId=888da77dfc9540cdb7af02d0c62b3c36&api_key=XXXXX

I ran this one, just to see if the UserId might be influencing the results, and it didn't
http://emby.mydomain.com/emby/Shows/86171/Episodes?api_key=XXXXX

If I specify the SortBy=PremiereDate, then the list order is correct
http://emby.mydomain./emby/Shows/86171/Episodes?SortBy=PremiereDate&UserId=888da77dfc9540cdb7af02d0c62b3c36&api_key=XXXXX

I looked in the logs and the sort I see there is SortName, which gives me the messed up ordering (well, messed up in regards to playing the next episode, it is actually ordering by the name of the episode)

Not Play all queue but Continue Row.  Here are a few episodes of season one from Two Broke Girls

Episode 1-4 are watched, 5 is partial, 6 watched, 7 partial, 8 watched

From home screen my Continue row
image.png.0142ba60683c9e71483d2f43f1b662d8.png

I click and watch episode 5 finishing it.  Now I get

image.png.d9618d4072f6de6f9a6884968fec1ab9.png

Episode 7 of course hasn't been fully watched so it is the next episode to continue.  I now watch this continuing from the resume point and now get

image.png.5ee63c657bad482d616253f0a53e5cd4.png

This completely followed the logic shown first of what was and wasn't watched and on playback picked up properly at the resume points.

It is the lack of sort by premiere date. @ebr was on the right track. @rhodges You hit the nail on the head. @Luke *ding*

No, there should not be a sort by on that query but the default (no sort order) should be returning in episode order.  Do all of these episodes have proper season and episode numbers if you look at them in the metadata editor?

Yes, they do. As does Futurama, Star Trek Enterprise, Family Guy, etc (which I also have the same issue). I spot checked about a dozen shows with the query that does not explicitly set the SortOrder and they call come back alpha sorted by the Episode name.

This is Crusoe, a shorter show so I could get the entire response. I removed the background images to make the json a little smaller

I rolled back to a few different versions and found about the point where the behavior changed:

I did the Castle S01E01 play test in the web browser and the Crusoe postman api query mentioned above. Works means Castle was going to play S01E02 at the end of S01E01 and the Crusoe test means the "natural" order of the episodes query w/o specifying a SortOrder returned episodes in the correct sequence.

4.5.4.0 - works
4.6.0.50 - works
4.6.1.0 - broken
4.6.2.0 - broken
4.6.4.0 - broken

So it broken with the Database changes something not working correctly in your new database.

If you created a new library and moved said problem media into this new folder/library do you get the same results?
