Anyone running Emby directly on Debian Testing? (no docker or flatpak)

Hi all,

Anyone running Emby on Debian Testing?

I want to run Emby on Debian Testing.  I've been using Debian for many years, started way back when Sarge first came out, a long time ago.  I thoroughly learned Etch, and have loved Debian ever since.  I've tried all the other distro's over the years, and even UNIX before Linux was a thing (loved SCO UNIX).  I always come back to Debian.

I think it's fair to say IMHO that the Debian Testing branch is more stable, than other distro's so-called stable branch.  Rarely are there major problems with Debian Testing.  It's a shame that Debian Stable seems to last forever, at least 2 years, before the next Testing branch is promoted to stable.  Too many things change in two years.  Backports becomes crucial, and not all packages make it in there.

I'm seriously tempted to just build a Debian Testing minimal server, install the Emby package, resolve any dependency issues, then toss on a few things like Samba so my Windows pc's can map a share, and then maybe Webmin to simplify some administrative duties.  I'll end up adding a ton of useful monitoring utilities as well.  If I want to add anything else, like OpenVPN, it's easy enough.

I've been leaning towards OpenMediaVault, because it's Debian, but since it's based on a stable that's two years old, and Debian 11 Bullseye hasn't been frozen yet for stable, well I guess I'm itching for the next major release.  OMV 6 (for Debian 11) has an initial alpha version out, but it's barebones, they haven't added much of anything to it yet, let alone work out the kinks.  Realistically will be maybe six months before OMV 6 on Debian 11 becomes a thing.

What do you think?  Anyone here running the Emby package on Debian Testing?  I'm sure it works, but are there any issues that are unresolved?  I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks

I guess I should add that i'm okay installing Emby as flatpak too, but will try native first.  Start at the beginning, then work thru other options like flatpak or even docker if I must.

Yes, I am, it works great. I'm a couple of point releases behind on upgrades, but otherwise no issues at all.

Bullseye has been mostly frozen for the stable transition, at this point.

I don't think it's a 'shame' at all; if you want shorter cycles, don't use Debian, use Ubuntu or Mint or one of the other derivatives. Debian values stability, and so their release cycles are longer.

Yes, you are right, of course, it's just the anxiously waiting part :) that gets me

Can flatpak be configured to auto-update?

If so, that might be a better way to run Emby, instead of native mode.

Once we become listed in the Flatpak repository, yes, and we are working on that. But for now with the manual downloads, no.
