BUG: Taglines for new titles missing since 4.6.3.0

Recommended Posts

Since updating to 4.6.3.0 (I just went to 4.6.4.0 and the issue is still there) any title imported with Taglines in the metadata file do *NOT* show up once the file and metadata have been scanned. This only applies to new titles added, anything added before updating to 4.6.3.0 still shows taglines appropriately.

Hi there, can you please go over a specific example? Thanks.

The tagline should be appearing between the Play buttons and the description. Again, this is only since updating to 4.6.3.0 (and now 4.6.4.0) and ONLY for new titles. Anything imported prior to 4.6.3.0 still shows the taglines correctly.

Hi, that's odd, as nothing was removed related to this. Are you really still relying on the legacy xml metadata format? It could be something specific to that.

@Happy2Play are you able to reproduce?

Will do some testing adding media but am not seeing any taglines issues with my xml metadata on 4.6.4.0 or 4.7.0.3 on new or old imports.

From a movie just added, Moved media with xml metadata to a test server.

	<Tagline>A new era of wonder begins.</Tagline>
	<Taglines>
		<Tagline>A new era of wonder begins.</Tagline>
	</Taglines>

tagline.thumb.jpg.180197d747b374d40103515ae1004bf1.jpg

But your tags are a little different but believe the code was changed to accommodate "TagLine" also with the case difference.

@Theodoredo you have a server log for that imported media?  What are your Library metadata reader order?

Well, something obviously changed because it started on the first import after going to 4.6.3.0.

And yes, I am "still" importing via XML after manually populating everything and locking the file with MetaBrowser. I want my metadata to be as completely correct as it can be and lets face it, Emby does not have a good history with 1) finding the correct information/title and 2) not purging data manually input on updates and ignoring locked files - its happened to me twice. I'm not gaming for a third. Nothing in my method of creating the metadata has changed, only the version of Emby.

Emby can not write xml metadata so Locking in Emby is sort of pointless.  So every time your xml gets read it could change database info if you are making changes via Emby UI.

I will probably have to test with everything disabled as I can assume you have all library options disabled correct?

Nothing has changed in my method of creating the metadata. I use MetaBrowser to create the XML, lock it, then let Emby discover/import on scheduled media scan.

Read order is "Emby Xml" then "Nfo"

Log file from the import attached (personal info obfuscated).

I just tried manually changing the line "<TagLine>Face the evil.</TagLine>" to <Tagline> and rescanned the title, no change.

The only thing in the library settings I have disabled is NFO saving. I don't change via the Emby UI as I am EXTREMELY anal about making sure my data is correct. If I make a change (which is rare) I am either doing it manually in the XML and re-scanning or copying the title back to the staging folder, change the data with MetaBrowser, delete the title from Emby, then let it import from new on the routine schedule.

So you have all providers still enabled?

But from a xml reader only standpoint yes I can reproduce the issue of tagline line not populating.  Still doing some testing.

@Luke4.5 populates tagline from xml, all providers disabled.

4.6/4.7 does not populate tagline from xml, all providers disabled.  With TMDB metadata provider enabled it populates.

@LukeNot sure when it was removed but it would appear the issue is the removal of this line.

XmlMetadata/BaseItemXmlParser.cs

I see the edit for 4.6.

Since I don't know code, and the single line is "TagLine" without the "s" and the node line starts with "Taglines" lowercase "l" there are some issues here.

Adding back L292 allowed it to work in my tests.

But there does not appear to be a section for the single line version in the plugin (TagLine/Tagline) in the code (only in the  Loop through each element section but don't know how that works as it is a sub-section of Fetches from Taglines node) .  So the "FetchFromTaglinesNode" requires L292 because of the case.  All just guess work on my part.

@TheodoreDoes this fix your issue?  All I did was add L292 back into the plugin.

Assuming you mean that I am replacing the file at C:\Users\AdminUser\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\plugins, the file creation date of the original file is 27 May 2021. I replaced the file and re-scanned all titles added over the last 2 weeks and am not seeing a change. Do I need to restart the service to engage this or should I see it immediately? Do I need to delete and re-add the titles? Do I have the right file?

Possibly is you have a older installation as new one would be "C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\plugins".  But older installs do not have the programdata folder so all Emby config/data folder could reside at this level.

Yes you have to Restart Emby to load the new dll.

You would need to Refresh a item, but you could possible do Refresh Search for missing also.

Sorry, this has been our "Annual day to blow shit up" so I was sitting outside with a hose ready because my area of FreedomLand (TM) is under a historic drought right now and my neighbors are pyromaniacs.

This installation is a couple years old and has been an in-place update as you've released since at least 2014. It is currently running on Server 2012R2. I do not have the *\programdata\ folder.

I restarted the service and rescanned the library, no joy. Rescanned the individual title, no joy. Deleted the title and re-added it, no joy. It appears that DLL change is NOT the solution to this.

And FWIW, I know Emby cannot write to XML anymore and that is one of the key reasons I like importing titles with XML, because I know I have the correct metadata for my titles at all times.

Not sure then as it reads the Taglines nodes in my xml files with this change.

	<Taglines>
		<Tagline>A new era of wonder begins.</Tagline>
	</Taglines>

It does not read single node <TagLine> or <Tagline>.

<Tagline>A new era of wonder begins.</Tagline>

I tested adding multiple items with all providers disabled, only xml reader enabled. In 4.6.4.0 and 4.7.0.3.

image.thumb.png.26ca6046806296387c79c375125e986f.png

Here is my xml only difference I see is MCM write the unused <Tagline> and your writes unused <TagLine>.  Possibly some other area compared to MetaBrowser.

Renamed from movie.xml to keep them straight, but see attached. "Army of the Dead" was the last imported title that acknowledged the taglines as encoded in the XML and no changes have been made to the format of the file, this is very definitely something that was changed in Emby. Going through my library the first item that was imported that had Taglines in the XML but does not show them was added on 24 May 2021.

Edit: Just in case it isn't clear, "Army of the Dead" shows correctly, all information expected to be displayed is displayed - including Tagline. I included it's XML as reference since it was the last title imported that behaved as expected.

@TheodoreThey work for me reading the Taglines node.

But try this one, this has the L292 change from above and I added the single node Tagline/TagLine.  All three variations work for me, just like what is in your xml files, where mine only have 2 variations.

added section

                case "Tagline":
                case "TagLine":
                    {
                        var val = await reader.ReadElementContentAsStringAsync().ConfigureAwait(false);

                        if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(val))
                        {
                            item.Tagline = val;
                        }
                        break;
                    }

Not a coder so this is copy and paste with minor edits.

@Happy2Play so that DLL did not solve it either. I over-wrote the existing DLL at C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\plugins\XmlMetadata.dll and restarted the entire server to make sure the service got a complete refresh.

A couple questions regarding this:

1) On your test system, if you use the XML for "Fear Street" that I sent, do you see it appropriately?

2) On 22 May 2021 I imported "Army of the Dead" and it came in correctly pulling all relevant data - including tagline - from the XML. I usually wait 2 to 4 days from when you make a release to when I will update my server. You should have version history going on, can you look at the file from whichever version of Emby would've been "latest stable release" and see what the differences in that file would be?

3) For giggles I even went in to the XML and deleted the entire line <TagLine>Face the evil.</TagLine> from the title and rescanned the entire library (by manually starting the scheduled task), the metadata folder (by manually starting the scheduled task), and by manually re-scanning the title with "Search for missing" - all were unsuccessful.

The 4.6 change was a lot of things.  But you can see the comments on GitHub but nothing in the plugin changed in May do to updates added during beta cycle, but server 4.6.1.0 was release 24 May.

@Happy2Play

I don't know what to tell you with this, I even tried enabling TheMovieDB as a downloader (even though I still have NFO saving turned off). I do have the image fetchers enabled, but that feels irrelevant to me.

If there is something to check on my settings I am happy to do so, but everything I see shows this to be a bug in how Emby is coded for importing data. I am running Emby as a service on Server 2012R2 with local storage for all titles. Same as I've done for literally YEARS with no changes.

Are you saying with TMDB enabled you are still not getting Tagline?  Is so there are other issues then as TMDB does return Tagline ie with no nfo or xml.

Can you test shutting down the service and launch the application

Correct. Even with TMDB enabled, I do not get Taglines.

Done. Let the application run a full scan, manually ran a full scan, manually ran a metadata update, and manually rescanned the title. In all instances, no change to behavior.

The log clearly show you getting all info from TMDB for Fear Street so I don't know what your system is doing.

What are you calling metadata update?

Scans will not do anything for any item already imported into Emby unless you are modifying/touching the files again so Emby sees a time stamp change.

Manage --> Advanced --> Scheduled Tasks --> Scan Metadata Folder AND right click on the title and select "Refresh Metadata".

Manually changed the file (removed the period from <TagLine>Face the evil.</TagLine> line and ran the Scan Metadata Folder task and manually refreshed at the title. No change, tagline is still missing.
