Musicbrainz question for adding genre tag

Recommended Posts

I'm transferring all my music into emby from itunes.  Most of it should be fine, but I've digitized a bunch of records.  The Song and Album names on them are fine, I don't want them to change, but It's missing other data like genre and release dates.  Is there a way for me to load my library into musicbrainz, find which files are missing that particular information and batch add it?  Thanks.

Picard is their tagging app, if that's what you're asking.

yes sorry. Picard.  I've downloaded it, but not entirely sure how to use it.  It's just those two fields that I would want adjusted in the file.  So I would first need picard to filter out which songs are missing that information.

You can use mp3tag as you can add the mbz column and search via mbz also, but in the end what ever tag editing software you are comfortable with.

Picard is more about working with albums and grouping the tracks to said album.  Sound link you just need to something like mp3tag and load the music and sort the column and add info to the track missing info.

Is it possible to do this in picard?  As, it seems you have to purchase mp3tag for mac.  If not, I'll find a PC to use.

Yes you can do this in either Picard or Mp3tag.

ok great!  Do you know how?  I can't seem to figure out how to specify just those two fields.  It wants to rename everything.

I'd suggest maybe watching a couple of youtube videos to see how to similar things to this.

Maybe someone else can suggest specifics how to do this?

For a test, I added genre and release year for this album:

But even after completely refreshing the album, the artist, and then the whole library in emby, the genre and year still don't pop up.

What did I do wrong?

How would i get to that from my synology.  I access it on a mac.

I would copy Emby ffprobe from your synology to a pc and run the command line.

Application path: /volume1/@appstore/EmbyServer/system

I'll for that.

I also tried manually adding the musicbrainz id through edit metadata:

But that still did not add the information.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong here.  I'm logging into my nas through ssh in terminal.  I type in this command line:

ffprobe -i file:"\\Pergamum\Music\ITunes Music\A Tribe Called Quest\Midnight Marauders {VR}\13 Lyrics To Go {VR}.m4a" -threads 0 -v info -print_format json

and the response I get is:

-ash: ffprobe: command not found

Here is a screenshot of the file path:

Well the command line has to be from the folder containing ffprobe as the like showed examples.

You see here I changed directory or you can do full path to ffprobe via command line

Y:\Emby-Server\system>ffprobe -i file

do i still access my nas through ssh first?

is this the full command line i would enter?

Y:\Emby-Server\system>ffprobe -i file:"\\Pergamum\Music\ITunes Music\A Tribe Called Quest\Midnight Marauders {VR}\13 Lyrics To Go {VR}.m4a" -threads 0 -v info -print_format json

That is my path no your path.

I am not a NAS/Linux/MacOS user.  I am Windows so I would open command window and change directory to where my ffprobe is ie Y:\Emby-Server\system>.  But yours is in /system on your NAS but have no idea how that translates to your command line.  I could many be fine an example in someone's server log.

But as mentioned you can copy Emby ffprobe to your Mac and command line from there.

But from the NAS it should be something like this, but do not know exactly

/volume1/@appstore/EmbyServer/system/ffprobe -i file:"\\Pergamum\Music\ITunes Music\A Tribe Called Quest\Midnight Marauders {VR}\13 Lyrics To Go {VR}.m4a" -threads 0 -v info -print_format json

ah ok.  I'll try that one.

Also, how would i copy emby ffprobe to my mac?  I find it to be not the easiest to access these files on synology.

If you need the PC version you can get it from the windows portable install zip as it's just a file in the system folder.  For a Mac or other OS I'd download the Emby software for that OS and extract the ffprobe if possible or just install the server temporarily and extract the ffprobe from it.

If it's okay, can I attach the file here?  I feel like that might be more efficient based on my recent struggles figuring it out.

Your browser does not support the HTML5 audio tag

Had no issue with the track the way it is tagged.

And retagging witn Picard adds overview and year.

That's weird.  So why do you think mine won't read.  I'll try replacing all the metadata again.  Maybe if I just delete the artist and album.nfo and let emby create a new one?

I wouldn't think a platform issue.  I would guess a database issue. But we have not looked at a server log for any of these processes yet.

@cayarsdid you get the same results I did on that track on your NAS?

I didn't test it @Happy2Play.  Do we have any sample files for this?

I grabbed the one attached above.  Since it is attached to the post just right click the player and save as.
