Scan Media Library Failed and Continue Watching Issues

Hi all,

Hoping someone can help, I have attached my Emby server log and also a text file with an error message I am getting daily about 'Scan Media Library Failed' to see if someone can tell me what the issue might be that is causing this.

Since updating to 4.6 version and now on latest 4.6.3 I've experienced the following...

Scan Media Library Failed on dashboard and not sure what's causing this
Emby stops marking items as complete and showing the next item on the Continue Watching bar that is now the new merged one

I'm not sure if the new update is causing any of these issues but other than that I now have a library folder for TV Shows with over 2,000 folders in it and wondering is this too large for Emby which might be throwing up these errors..

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Interesting as the error log would not appear to correspond with the server log as the error in not in the log.  But there are several topic as there is a issue for some on 4.6.3.0 with database lock.  Please follow the section in the KB for removing database locks.

https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44002210894

You also have permissions that need to looked at "Formula 1 Drive to Survive" and "2000s/Zombieland (2009)".

The issue with random database locks should be resolved in 4.6.4.0 when released or if you wish to install current beta 4.7.0.3 now.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I can sort the permissions on those two items and will take a look at the database lock, what would the database lock be causing an issue with exactly, would it be the scanning of the media library or this other issue with the server not marking watched and next up items?

Any idea on the size of my TV Shows if the 2,000+ folders is an issue? Does emby have a 'max' sub directories in terms of what it can handle maybe?

Cheers

All other topics it was a Locked database issue, once resolving that corrected all issues.

Sorry yes I overlooked that error as you do have a issue with inotify so you will have to patch that file.  Don't know your exact system but there are topics in this section somewhere.

System.IO.IOException: System.IO.IOException: The configured user limit (8192) on the number of inotify watches has been reached, or the operating system failed to allocate a required resource.

Sorry to sound dumb

I have no idea what ibotify is but clearly I have an error with it, is it related to the amount of items I have in that one library folder?

Are you able to clarify what inotify is / does and what this 8192 limit refers to exactly?

Thanks for all your help so far

Yes it is do to your folder structure.  Inotify is what your OS uses to monitor changes in the filesystem and the is what triggers Emby's Real Time Monitoring as it uses those events to scan the newly added/changed item.  Otherwise you would be dependant of scheduled task library scans.

I do not know this platform but this may help

That's great I can see now I ran a command on the unix based server my Emby runs from and I can see the 8192 limit so this needs to be increased to fix the real time monitoring on my TV Shows folder due to its size.

Thanks you for the link regarding the database lock I need to try this as I realised this issue I have had with the continue watching and marking items as read seems to have happened since a server crash 2 days ago. Hopefully following that guide to remove the database locks may fix my issue on the watching / next bar.

Really appreciate all your help.

Have you also checked the storage on your server just to be safe?

A crash can be caused by a dB locking up due to either the bug in your version or a lack of storage (As I found out the hard way recently)

Hi Luke,

Sorry for delay in replying on this topic, I have ran a couple of things as per the info from Happy2Play and it seems to have done the trick...

The issue with not scanning the TV Shows Library was due to folder count so I used a command in unix to edit a config file for the user limit on inotify so that's all ok.

Regarding the issue of Continue Watching this seems to be ok now and also no more errors on scanning library. I followed this guide...

https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44002210894

Removed a database lock and also scanned my database to check its integrity and all is ok now so this topic can be closed if needed.

Thanks for all the help !!
