How do podcasts work in emby?

I couldn't find too much info on this in the forum or in Knowledge Base.  It shows it's supported, but not how to properly set everything up.

I don't just stream my podcasts, I have them all kept and downloaded with iTunes.  If I transfer these folders and files to emby will it simply read the metadata in the file and pull all the order info from there?  Is there a site emby uses to reference this, like it does for movies and music?

Hi, the podcast plugin is meant to add an RSS feed that contains podcasts such as:
https://rss.art19.com/the-daily

You don't pre-download or do anything other than add the appropriate feed for the podcast.  Emby takes care of the rest.

It's rather simple to setup and use.

Thanks.  Will this also download new episodes when they become available?  Also, if I add my old podcast files to emby, will they show up?  Is there a proper folder structure?

It doesn't download them but sets up links in Emby to follow and play the Podcasts. Emby essentially streams them to the clients from the location pointed to in the RSS feed.

So you could have 100K podcast episodes running on a thumb drive. :)

Thanks.  I do prefer to download them because I've had episodes disappear before.  Sometimes a podcast will be sold to something like spotify, and then suddenly all the back episodes are no longer accessible.

I'll into gpodder for keeping track of them.

So there's no official process for organizing them in emby?  Basically, if i make a mixed library folder, it'll treat each individual podcast kind of like a tv show?  And scrape all naming and ordering information from inside the file itself?

think i had to set something in gpodder to get it to name the files by the episode names. then i get:

and

Hi.  Not really at this time because we don't have a metadata provider that would identify them properly.

podchaser.com looks like it could be a possible option for that.

Do you mind showing me an example of the actual file name for one of the bonus episodes to get it between episode 10 and 11?  Is there a way to have emby autosort them by release date so that bonus episodes are always in the correct spot?

they are named on disk exactly as they show up in emby because there is no metadata

gpodder shows a release date but that isnt brought through into the file attributes at all. and some of the shows (included the one i provided the screenshot of) were downloaded on one go. otherwise you would be able to sort on date added and get what you are looking for.

its not perfect, but its good enough

Totally agree because currently Emby Podcasts are almost useless and lack a lot of features any other podcast software have.

You can check which metadata sources opensource projects are using. For example AntennaPod.

A podcast rss feed includes everything you need for metadata, e.g. images, description, etc.

I've used Podcastchaser.com to find my podcasts. When you find the page containing those podcasts there is an rss feed link at bottom right. I copied and pasted that into the add-on in Emby and it worked prefectly. All episodes there and play fine.

I've searched the forums and can someone please tell me HTF the podcast plugin even works?  I can't seem to find any way to add podcasts as a library addon as some people have in their pictures.  When I do a search on the server all it does is show me podcasts (that I have never added) and no information whatsoever.  Even in the wiki there is no mention of how to add podcasts.  Why??  Why is the documentation so lacking?

edit: can I also add, why in the love of hell does the plugin require the use of RSS feeds, something that died over a decade ago.  Why the heck is this so archaic and completely user unfriendly?

In my opinion, there's really not much podcast support in emby.

A lot of these shows are actually being added to tvdb now.  So if Emby could add the ability to recognize audio files in a TV library, then you could use tvdb as a metadata source.  I created a feature request for it, but I don't think it's gone anywhere.

I still don't understand how podcasts work in Emby. In the "Podcasts" directory, what file(s) should appear there? Does an RSS URL like this - https://feeds.simplecast.com/ZoGIhfvz  - get pasted into a [filename].xml or [filename].rss file?

Hi, there is no podcast directory that you need to mess with. You simply install the Podcasts plugin, then use the plugin configuration to point it to your rss feeds.

And yes, that appears to be valid podcast rss.

Aha! Works - thanks.

View settings definitely needs work, since DATE is not an option. to display below each episode, and the truncated titles aren't very user friendly.

Any movement on adding audio file support for tv series?  With podcasts being added to tvdb, it's a significantly more organized way of using podcasts for people that download and keep them.

I would suggest creating a feature request topic. Thanks !
