I use aegisub to format my ass subtitles for my movies.  I have a pre-defined template for 1080p and 2160p.  So they don't change.  Always looked good on my LG 4k TV.  Using latest Windows server version and Android TV version on the Shield.  Now suddenly the subtitles are super small and even if I set the subtitles way bigger, they still come up small.  They do  not look that small on my PC screen however just playing the file directly thru VLC.  Is Emby modifying the size of the subs?  Hate to set the font to an obnoxious size and then it totally changes with some update.

Note my movies are HEVC and in an MKV container and so are the subs.

I dont know it is being asked before, but could you apply at least the scaling factor to ass/ssa subtitles, some are tiny by format and when you warch it on a TV with some distance is hard to see them. For example I know MXPlayer can scale the size of them.

Hi.  What are the "PlayResX" and "PlayResY" values in the SSA file?

They are set to the movie size:

I thought when you created ASS subtitles that you were supposed to create a font size that you liked on a certain display, tell the subtitle what size screen it is, and then whatever display the subtitles are on, it adjusts accordingly. So in my brain, if a subtitle line starts at the outer edge of a person's right shoulder and ends at their left shoulder when authored, it should maintain that aspect for any other screen size it's presented on. Is this inaccurate? So for example:

On my 4K TV this is 100 point or pixel (not sure what Subtitle EDIT uses) font bold:

However when I was in subtitle edit, it looks like this:

On my laptop set to 1920 x 1080 resolution:

So playing on my laptop and in Subtitle edit looks "similar" but on my 4k TV looks less "bold" and dimensions are different.

Yes, that's the idea.  But implementations are not always consistent, and fonts can vary (if the specified font is not available, for instance - often they are not embedded in the media file as they should be), and the Emby server doesn't use embedded fonts anyway when burning in ASS subs, as far as I can see.

But I can't comment on your particular issues, as the linked images aren't showing for me.

Note I couldn't imbed the images when editing but see the links.  Updated the original response above so hopefully the links stick.  Using Arial so going to assume the font isn't an issue.

I must confess that the difference in this case isn't enough to worry me - there have been instances of much bigger discrepancies in some clients recently.  But this is one for the devs to look at, I guess.

Y'all know this is the very first time I have heard anyone complain that their ASS was too small.

Sorry, I could resist taking a swing at that low hanging fruit.

Hi, if you play them in the web app, how does that compare?

Here's what I get thru Web:

Those are ASS?  They look like plain SRT.  Do they have any special formatting they should be using?

I suspect it is the resolution setting that is causing this as we've seen this before with high values in there.  Most of these appear to be authored with those setting in much lower ranges.

ASS subs often look like SRT in Emby when there's no special positioning or colour, because some Emby clients (and the Server when transcoding and embedding subs) don't use the specified fonts (whether embedded or on the machine).

Right, my point being that the web may only be using rudimentary rendering instead of following the strict definition in the SSA file and that would ignore any sizing as well.

In my experience, the sizing is followed pretty well.  It can go wrong, though, when the ASS-specified oddball font has a very different size from arial/whatever for any given nominal size.  So even if correctly processed, the font size may be effectively wrong if the specified font isn't used.

What happens if you use the Android Mobile app?

I'll have to borrow an Android phone from work however what I have defined for the sub is Arial, 100 size(not sure if that's pixels or points), bold, with a 2 pixel or point black border around it.  Haven't tried it with Emby on my 1080p TV.  I'm just mind boggled that setting the font size to 100 is a thing.  That would in theory be massive.

Hi. You can install that app on the same device you're running the TV app on to test.
