They are blocked, that's not an issue, but the ads are cached and thus I need to factory wipe the unit and to proove a point - I'm not sure I want to do that as it's all working perfectly for me ... .  Being honest, I actually have very little issue with how it looks now with the new layout - I much prefer it to the old - I now just have an apps row with 4 apps (fully selectable) and an emby recommendations row - that's it.  The ads are nice graphics of upcoming movies with a small 'play now' option on them if you decide to scroll up - hardly 'in your face'.    So unless the ads get worse, I'm actually inclined to leave it alone for the time being.

Yup.. This gives me ideas for Radarr...

IMO the update is an aesthetic upgrade for the home screen in general.  One banner at the top of your device screen advertising some upcoming or current movie or series really doesn't ruin anything for me.  In fact, it makes it look better and there have even been multiple occasions where I saw something there and ended up seeking it out and liking it.

Been dealing with it on my MiBox s' for some time now. I hardly even see it anymore.

I think I've seen the new home screen once.  I start right up into Emby

In Spain, we have the same launcher with the spammer row. I like Android TV less and less, I have my Shields just for Emby.

Does anyone else have this layout? Can it be specific to Spain? I have read that the update will be deployed differently in different countries. All launcher with new ad row.

That looks exactly like mine except you turned on more channels

Haw.. that is the first thought that came to my head. Why the weird shadowy boxes behind all the icons? Is it trying to be KODI little brother or sister?

<TheNewUI> Hi Kodi
<KODI> *flips it the bird*

It looks confused. Icons up top need big thumbnail shadows under and space 'em wide apart. Icons below shovel them right up next to each other like best buddies.

They still think the UI should look like a computer...

Side-Note: Those "ads" with the little play icon are part of the industry. Nvidia was told to either catch-up and get there or pay the piper. That is why suddenly things get enabled without updates. Google is trying to compete against the Apple, Amazon, and Roku of the world. They want your eyeballs on their content even if you are not playing it.

Bloat the apps! Yeah! I pay, they do whatever they want. Some legislation is needed.

Today I saw a girl offering curses to do telemetry hahahahaha. Was like a joke.

Anyway....

It will depends of the country and the content rights of every country. BUT.... Nvidia could do it global. Nvidia don't care the user.

How much money Disney could pay to Google to be first in the APP list of the Google Play? Same history for that kind of ads.

I don't know if I would purposely avoid something I saw there purely out of spite but considering everything they're showing me is something I'd go out of my way to avoid even if it wasn't being thrust in my face against my will, we may never know.  I'm not getting suggestions for things I might possibly care about seeing, that's for damn sure.

In that matter.. Google is the Devil and Nvidia is his son.

I agree. We need compensation for watching. They need to share the money with us they get. We are doing the work watching... Else there needs to be some kind of on-screen dialog box saying (The advertiser is paying us 2 cents for us to force you to sit through this). A disclaimer of some kind to let the consumer know their view is subsidized by a sponsor partner who is financially incentivized to produce content for them. That this behavior isn't nice.

Same way they have legislated sponsored posts on social media. That should apply to these interstitial advertisements shown on device home screens. It should apply to all. There should be no favored media consumption platform. They should all be on the same ball field with same rules applied to all.

.....But that will never happen because politicians are people. People are biased by financial contributions to their campaign to office. The politicians  "owe" for these contributions. There is no free lunch or luncheon. This means that once they are in an office where they can make real change that instead they now for the next several decades will continue to push for rewards via bills/laws to dish out the rewards for decades ago contributions. The system is rigged that way. People are forced to make bad decisions. It will take decades before any law put into place today has any meaningful effect tomorrow. The effect that the people really want may take a century of change. Look at racism. It has taken two centuries to clean up and it still is not done.

interesting you mention Disney...

The new movie "Luca" was coming out on Roku. Disney must have told Roku they wanted to own the screensaver. The City Scroll screen-scape screen saver became a full screen advertisement for the movie Luca. I mean it was beautiful. It was a double parallax with animated elements. It was interesting. But it wasn't City Scroll. It was full on Disney+ and I do not even have Disney+. But it was thrust in my face on every Roku TV I own without my consent. It was interesting to see that it appear 2 days before the movie could even be watched. That was Disney hoping for early subscribers or something. But it shows a trend.

Disney is much more powerful than Google. Google doesn't produce content. They forgot to jump on that band wagon. Google is merely a distributor. It has a lot of catching up to do. That is why they are infuriate you on your Nvidia Shield. That is entirely why. They can only scrape money with advertisement. They cannot make royalties like Amazon, Netflix, or anybody else.

I too have the update on the Shield TV but it's not bad to me especially compared to other platforms.  For me the UI of the homescreen is still very simple to use and easy to find your apps.

Now compare that to the Amazon Sticks which have a home screen that to me is a mess. I'd be willing to wager 9 out of 10 people using an Amazon stick would take this Google Home Screen update in heartbeat over their present home screen. :)

There is now a workaround that I got from Nvidia support.

Settings > Apps > See All Apps > Show System Apps > open Google Play Services > click Force Stop > click Disable > click Clear Cache.

That worked for me.  Ads are gone and good freaking riddance.

To those suggesting nvidia was the spawn of satan, they didn't put out this update.  This is all google.  The level of evil you want to assign to anyone involved I'll leave up to you :)

Well, nVidia did add this ugly Netflix button on my remote and I have never used Netflix in my life.  So they aren't void of all evil

NICE!

That worked like a charm.  Gone is the add region and it's back to "normal".

Surely though, if you disable Google Play Services you'll never get any other app updates, including Emby.

I just uninstalled the updates to Android TV.

I don't have auto updates enabled, never have.

Nice - thanks.

I can now go back to seeing if I can find out the URL it is using for the Ad stream without needing to resort to a factory reset to get rid of the cache.  New ads were shown on my Shield last night (before turning off the service) so I know it's not the normal web Ad streams as they are now globally blocked on my f/w - and this definitely works as web pages etc are now showing zero 3rd party ads which is nice.

I had that layout for a few days here in the UK, i think they ease you in slowly, after the third day i exited Emby to the home screen and the discover tabs etc were now active with a pop up explaining how more productive the hoemscreen is and it tries to get you to sign in for the discovery tab.

To be fair It does not bother me i only use the app row, i rarely ever click on the channels and the top banner is just oblivious to me now

I turned on my 2017 Nvidia Shield the other day to the new home screen and was nothing less than angry!  I immediately installed a couple of third party launchers, including ATV Launcher Pro, but didn't like any of them.  So, I thought I would just roll back the Android TV Home app and block auto updating.

That worked fine for the rest of the day, but then I woke up to the new Launcher staring at me again, and decided that using a launcher that I really wasn't happy with was better than what Google decided to force down my throat, so I reinstalled TV Launcher, even though it can be a bit buggy, and Launch on Boot, to open that app any time the Shield is started or wakes from sleep.

Then I saw FrostByte's post about launching Emby at startup. Considering that the only thing that I really ever use the Shield for is Emby though I was going to go that route, then I saw Deathsquirrel's post about uninstalling Google Play Service updates and decided that I would try that first, and block auto updates.

I suspect I'll wake up tomorrow with that dumb ass new Google laughing in my face again, and if that is the case then I'll go with launching straight into Emby.

Yeah that "solution" is bound to cause problems down the road.

You can always re-enable it from time to time to get updates then turn it back off as long as it works.

My solution

You need go to settings Apps-- all apps-- scroll down to system apps  and find "Android TV Home" from there you uninstall updates, and that's it

Of course no automatic updates will be allowed anymore. Just manual.
