dvesely 3 Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 Hi.. I am running Emby on a Windows 10 PC with a big external disk for my video collection.... I set it up using the default settings but would like the ability to take the disk with me with I travel and attach it to my laptop. How can I move all the Emby data like playlists, people, titles, categories .. you know EVERYTHING to the external disk so that when I attach it to the laptop, It behaves the same as it would on the home desktop pc? Thanks for any help
rbjtech 5285 Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 Depending how custom your current install is and if you want to keep 'watched' status - it may be easier to just install a 'portable' version of emby directly onto the external disk - start from scratch and and run emby from there. You can of course also copy the contents of your current emby over the top of the new portable version, but that's a little bit more involved (but keeps your watched status) Lastly, if you are a premier user - then you can backup your current setup using the backup plugin and simply restore the config to your new location. A new metadata scan is still needed in all cases. 3
dvesely 3 Posted September 16, 2021 Author Posted September 16, 2021 (edited) So sorry for the very late response! For some reason I did not get notified that there were any replies to my post! Also as I have not been travelling much due to Covid, the need for portability has not been great. But I have some travel coming up and like the "portable" idea. Although I bet that version is not as powerful for multiple users watching at the same time. I don't care about watched/unwatched status but do have playlists I'd rather not use. This also seems like a good opportunity to at least try a few months of Emby Premier. If for no other reason to be able to use the backup to move my stuff! Can you help with a list of steps for doing this and links with instructions on how to do those steps? Much appreciated! Dan P.S. I just found the "follow topic" button! Carlo 4561 Posted September 16, 2021 Posted September 16, 2021 Actually what @rbjtech mentioned is probably your best best using a portable Emby Server installation. If you have saved NFO files and graphics to the media libraries it would also be easy to setup Emby Server on your notebook as a separate install configured new and just recreate new libraries pointed at the USB drive. This way you have 2 different Emby Servers setup and can use either one depending where the USB3 drive is plugged in. With only a single disk of content it won't take long to rescan the libraries. This second approach would also give you a "backup" Emby Server as well.
