Question/issue playing movies with Dolby Vision

Just got a 77" LG CX OLED and have the newest Shield TV Pro and I'm noticing that when starting a movie that has Dolby Vision several things may happen (same movie):

- Movie starts fine and DV indicator appears at top right corner of tv

- Movie starts fine but HDR indicator appears at top of right corner of tv instead of DV

- Movie starts, DV indicator appears but there is no picture, just audio

Again, I'm seeing this occur on any DV movie selected and its hit or miss what happens out of the 3 scenarios above.  Is this an issue with Emby? the Shield? or possibly the actual cable??

Hi, can't answer that question yet as not enough info is given.

To get DV to work the file needs to be direct played.  So the first step is to make sure the Shield TV is direct playing the files (stats for nerds).
DV should be able to fall back to HDR and to be honest most people can't tell a difference when playing either.

What is your cabling coming out of the Shield TV?

Hi. We have seen several reports like this with inconsistent behavior of rips with DV.  My suspicion at this point (pure conjecture) is that the tools for ripping these items aren't perfect yet.

Thanks for the responses.  I'm getting the cable changed out today that is going from the Denon receiver to the CX OLED so will see if that makes a difference.  The connection between the Shield and the receiver is a certified Monoprice cable that meets all the specs.

I run a similar setup - Shield Pro > Denon > LG CX8 and since ripping to single layer DV/MKV or converting dual layer to single via MakeMKV - I have not had any issues playing DV.

One thing to note is I use 'Direct File' via the shield - so that may influence the outcome here.  My system does, very rarely, drop back to HTTP for some reason - but I've never had DV fall back to HDR.

What container are the DV files - are they MP4 or MKV rips and how were they made ? (MediaInfo will give you the details)

It really depends on the film and mastering stuidio tbh - some DV titles are barely noticeable (some say worse until your TV is setup correctly) vs HDR but other are 'wow' moments.  My Fair Lady is a great example of how DV should be done - colours just jump out the screen, with HDR, colour look good but 'meh' in comparison ..

Got the HDMI cable changed out in the conduit, and played 2 DV movies real quick to test and they played back fine.  Will test more in depth when I can and report back.

@rbjtechwhat are you referring to as in "direct file"?

With the Shield, you can mount UNC file shares and directly access them, bypassing emby altogether when playing back files - ie 'File' mode.  This is exactly what Kodi and VLC do for example.

https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44002058112-shield-tv-direct-file-access

ps - with the shield - make sure the Optional File path server name is in CAPS.  ie \\SERVER\sharename not \\server\sharename

Also to add - sometimes it is an HDMI handshake 'timing' issue that causes the issues.  When emby plays back - it tries to match the playback to the device capabilities.  So if emby is unaware that DV is available, then it will not play it.  I always turn on the chain of the devices using CEC - ie turn on the Shield with the remote, which then turns on the Denon AVR, which then turns on the TV.  That way,  the correct device power up sequence is always used and emby is aware of all the device (TV and AVR) capabilities.

By plugging in the new HDMI cable, you would have reset the HDMI handshakes, my theory is this is probably why it is now working.  Try doing the same with the 'old' HDMI cable - it may now work - I would be interested if it didn't.. ;)

@rbjtechThanks for the info!

All my files are on a Synology NAS and are labeled like this:

/volume1/Movies

/volume2/Movies 2

Would changing the naming convention cause me to re-edit all my currently selected posters, background etc??

I don't believe so - you just need to add the same Synology NAS path in the OPTIONAL path in the library settings.

I don't have a synology NAS to test so I'm not 100% sure of the syntax used - if your nas is called 'nas' then it may be \\nas\volume1\Movies or it may be \\nas\Movies - could be upper case NAS as well - @cayars - Any views on the synology nas shares syntax for the shield ?

From I'm reading, I would first have to change the name of my Emby server on the Synology from "Emby" to "EMBYSERVER".

The next steps I'm not quite sure of -  would I have to change the volume name (each drive installed on the synology) over to "Media-A, Media-B, Media-C, etc etc" like it shows in the instructions? Instructions show an example like this:

C:\Media\Movies

\\EMBYSERVER\Media-C\Movies

Again, if I do end up changing this over for each drive on the synology nas, does Emby re-scan everything to the point where I would have to re-edit all the images to my currently selected posters, background etc?

Thanks again!

I have this working on my 920+.

First thing I did was rename the box to SYNOLOGY920 so it used all caps.
Then I setup the media shares with anonymously (read only) access over the lan so the Shield TV can access them.

Then it's just a matter of following the instructions in the KB article:

That should be fine.  It's only the server name that needs to be in caps.

@cayars So do I have to actually change the name of each volume on the synology nas then?  volume1 over to Media-A for example?

Looking at this now and dont think you can actually change the "name" of the volume on the synology nas.  How is yours labeled?

Just to be clear, I'm new to Synology in general as I've only had the 920+ for about a month but have had several different versions of Emby on it as well as DSM 6 & 7 on it.  I don't claim to be a Synology expert or anything.  My 920+ right now is only for testing and support you could say. I was already famility with Synology before I got it however for general things.

My production system runs on Windows Server but I've used the "direct file" play method with it from it's start and used that to write the KB article for the Shield TV.
So I'm pretty familiar with the whole process.

If you rename the NAS to all caps the volume names shouldn't matter.  If you can access any of your media files from any computer on your lan without needing to login it should work.

If you want send me a pic of your volume setup, I'll create one to match on my NAS and copy a few movies or shows over and give it a test run. Then I can show you exactly what I configured in Emby and on the Shield. Maybe even add to the KB article if I find anything useful.

If you rename the NAS to all caps and restart it, I could also remote in and give you a hand as well if you like.
What ever is best for you.

@cayarsThanks!  Here is a screenshot example of the control panel on my synology nas.  Do you recommend changing the nas name to all caps or the emby server name to all caps?.....or does it matter which?

Just the NAS name itself (Server name).

Don't know what DSM version you're running but on 7 RC it's in Control Panel->Network menu

Ok sorry here you go:

That's the place, just rename it using all capital letters and click the apply button.
I believe it will want to restart the NAS after that so make sure you've closed out apps or anything that you don't want open during a restart.

Got it!

So after changing that, do I just go into the Library and go to each folder setting and add the path under "(Optional) Shared network path"?  Do I leave the top entry alone?

Yes, that's it.
You will need to verify the files are available on the Shield TV when you create the mount points.  You may need to adjust privs on the NAS but you basically got it.

Ok thanks, will give it a shot.  Will let you know if I run into issues.  Does this look correct then?
