knitowskimedia 9 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 I have various music compilation albums on my server and after the update every song appears as its own album. Emby metadata shows the song's individual artist as the album artist despite the file itself not having anything in the album artist tag.
Carlo 4561 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 If you want these to all show up as a single album you would have to tag it so using both artist and artist album setting them to the same value. Otherwise you get the individual artists which is what the tags would tell otherwise.
knitowskimedia 9 Posted June 2, 2021 Author Posted June 2, 2021 Why would album view not simply use the album tag, and why is emby filling in the album artist tag when none exists? What am I supposed to put in the album artist tag when no album artist exists? 1
knitowskimedia 9 Posted June 2, 2021 Author Posted June 2, 2021 Looking through my other music, I have an album where emby is ignoring the album artist tag that the file has and is instead using the artist tag as the album artist tag as well. Another album, however, has everything properly in place, with both the artist and album artist tag showing up correctly.

That's fair. Checking some more of my music I've found several songs now where Emby and Mp3tag show different results for the album artist tag specifically, and on one these albums emby also ignores the disc number tag. Removing the album, scanning, then re-adding the album again produces the same results. I tagged all of these files the same way, so I'm not sure why some albums work correctly and others are using the artist tag in place of the existing album artist tag.

Just to be clear, you're saying for compilations with "Various Artists" in the Album Artist tag, the Artist tag also needs to be "Various Artists"? For each track?
Carlo 4561 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 If you only want to see one artist then yes. If you want to see the different artists, then no. It just depends on what you want.
C.S. 93 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 Cool. I'm just going through my tags in preparation to upgrade to 4.6, and I just want to be sure how things will look in Emby when a compilation is tagged the way Picard does it, i.e. with each individual artist under Artist and "Various Artists" under Album Artist. Will that show up as a single album?
Carlo 4561 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 What I'd suggest doing is taking a compilation album or two and create a new music library with only those couple albums in it. Scanning will be quick and you can see first hand quickly what your tag changes do. After a couple album edits seen/done first hand it will make sense. 1
C.S. 93 Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 Got it thanks! I did as you suggested and all appears well

For each track? The Album Artist doesn't specifically have to be Various Artists, it just has to be the same value for every track in the album, whatever it happens to be. The Artist tag can then be the actual artist(s) for the track and can be different for each track.
