Emby sluggish on DS1621+

Recommended Posts

Posted

I recently migrated to a DS1621+ and the Emby system is pretty slow in its responses.

Do I need to do anything special when migrating from xpenology to Synology?

I am running DSM version 6.2.4

Emby version : 4.6.1.0

Hi there, please attach the emby server log from when this happened. Thanks.

Hi @Luke, the emby server has gone through an update since this started.

What Logs should I send exactly?

The one from the time frame in which the problem was experienced. Thanks.

Its always like this.

Ever since the migration.

Do you want all of the logs?

I can Zip and PM them to you...

Your system is better now correct after the vacuum and database cache size change?

Posted

Yes, Everything is much quicker.

Some whole page loading (like home page or music library main page) still have some delay/lag.

I think this might be a RAM issue.

I have ordered RAM expansion.

After the memory upgrade, I will update here if its still going on.

Thanks for the feedback. Let us know how you get on.

Hello,

I am curious about this statement

Your system is better now correct after the vacuum and database cache size change?

I have seen how to vacuum...but is there any info on the cache size and a rough guide on best sizing?

512 MB is probably the highest you would likely get use of but you can set it higher to 1024 if you like.  The memory will only get used if it can be used and won't be pre-allocated.

Just make sure you normally have free memory available before updating this setting.

Hi @JohnWhitmore,

The DB vacuum did help my system a lot.

All of my "critical" issues were resolved.

Only a few minor lags remain.

I hope this is due to lack of memory.

The memory only arrived today and I am having some issues with the installation 😬

Once the system will be running for a few days I will report back.

What issues are you having with the memory install?

Posted

Nas issues not emby..

The new memory didn't pass the Synology memtest a few times but at different % of progress.

Then I tried to switch slots and the nas went crazy.

Reboots and flashing lights.

Now I was finally able to properly boot the system and decided it's too late for any more risky attempts.

I am doing a controlled shut down. Tomorrow I will install the original memory and contact Amazon.

Edit the following on DSM 7:

/volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer/config/system.xml

If you're still on DSM6 I believe the path is /volume1/@appstore/EmbyServer

Change these two lines:

<VacuumDatabaseOnStartup>true</VacuumDatabaseOnStartup>
<DatabaseCacheSizeMB>1024</DatabaseCacheSizeMB>

In my Synology the folder the system.xml file is in:

Emby/config (volume1/Emby/config)

I have to give my admin user r/w to the Emby folder so that I can see and edit it.

DSM 6.2

thanks @FrostByte

Is this possible in the server interface ?

I believe @Luke mentioned adding it to the gui at some point, but I'm not seeing it in the latest beta

Yes we will be adding it.

So after a RAM upgrade and a new SSD cache (thank you prime day :D ) the system is running smoothly.

I set DB DatabaseCacheSizeMB to 1024.

I noticed that every time I change something my library scanning stops working and I have to manually run:

~$ sudo sh -c '(sleep 90 && echo 204800 > /proc/sys/fs/inotify/max_user_watches)&'
~$ cat /proc/sys/fs/inotify/max_user_watches

To get it back to 204800

Thanks for all the help guys :)

Great. In what area did you get benefits with the SSD for cache and what does Emby store in the cache?

I don't know if it is the cache or the RAM that helped performance as they were installed within hours of each other.

Loading pages and browsing the library is faster than before.

How would I check this?

I believe it stores some metadata and some content but this is just my guess.

I've got mine set to do that automatically at every reboot because it gets wiped out every time there's an Synology update or some change with my system
