I just didn't bend it I Broke it big time

For years I have been very intent on learning how to make computers do more tasks each time.

As a normal user, most of us are quite content with "1" machine in the house per user....  I realize some have to knuckle down and share a machine, mostly a desktop because all the kids now have cell phones that can run rings around our old butts.

I grew up in the ranks learning programming just like everyone else.  There was trailblazers out there that figured out how to make a computer sit up and beg.  They then wrote a terrible style of HowTO instructions and put them out there. Some has gone even as far as to make YOUTUBE videos to help along but there is one problem with that.  Microsoft,Linux,Redhat,Apache Server, and countless other private OS makers are constantly patching and changing their product in the name of keeping up with the bad guys.  Not only that, they are constantly fighting with the users saying "You cant Do That with our OS".  Which comes to this post.

I ran a Wildcat BBS many many years ago.  I know it was a love and a hated thing sometimes.  Users don't care if you are using the bathroom or sleeping.  They just want to get online with the board and download the latest chat info.  Facebook servers are full tilt sometimes and I am really wanting my friends and family to break the habit.

I wanted to create a single server (at my HOME) where I could store and send instant messages to MY Family.  They could log on to the server and leave little notes for each member.  Have their own private area for their hidden diary or such. Have EMBY available as a subdomain ( As required by the SYSOPS here )  PLEX available for those young taste. (Remember, I have grandkids and such, I don't want them seeing horror and mayhem).  Its strange because PLEX used to work great but now has become a PAIN. It used to have cloud storage, able to download a file etc etc.  Now all I use it for is the kiddy shows because it used the KISS method.

Then lately I watched on twit.tv about there being a whole lot of sites having to go SSL.  I figured What the Hey.  Sounds smart, I can do that.  I then followed a blog about the SSL made easy.

There was no pictures but what the hell, I cant see good enough anyway.  I wade thru it several times to make sure I didn't miss anything.  It all worked great.  To a point.

I was able to goto www.emby.arkansascajun.com and see emby.  I then tried to go back to the website (which by the way was hosted for a time on GOdaddy).  BLLAAMMM.

ERROR  ERROR ERROR

It seems that the DNS Change happened for the items I wanted but I forgot to start up IIS on window 10 pro to check if my simple server was running.

On top of all this.  I tried to load a VPN on the main machine.  My wife has a VPN on her machine for work.  We both go thru the same router and modem.

When I restarted my system,  I got to 10 minutes on the restart time and was panicking.  They system would not come back up right.

In all of this time, I never kept a detailed step by step guide of all I put into my system.  Think about it.  Dozens of programs  Many a thousand hours of work stuffed on hard drives.  Scripts to do backups and processes when I was not there.  Now the OS is lost and the only answer I can get from the help department.  Is "RESTORE YOUR OS TO DEFAULT".  I pulled out the drive with the last weeks backup and now the system can't read the drive.  What a time now. Katy bar the door, I'm getting my gun.  My wife came in and said with her immortal words "I hope this doesn't means we can't go on our holiday trip this weekend"

I just placed my head in my hands and said "No dear, I'll fix it when we get back".

PS....

10 minutes after we left, my wife asked why she couldn't get into the arkansascajun.com email account.  I almost ran off the road.

Yep. But the good thing is I blamed it on dementia and I left that part off.

I was able to get some form of order but now I will have to restart from scratch.

I am going to follow the top Pinned post about IIS with reverse proxy.  Maybe with luck I will get it back online.

Here is the scenario.

Motherboard : Ga 78LMT-USB3 / 64G Mem with 2 (5) port PCI USB3 boards.  FX-8320 CPU Standard Speed, Windows 10 Pro

1 TB Boot SSD

5 MyBook 8TB Externals

5 WD 4TB Externals

StableBit w/ Drive and cloud drive service < - This also encrypts my drives

Was running a virtual with SWS but lost the files.

I HAD the Simple Web Service on one drive that was  only accessed by an port in an app.  Now I can't remember how I set it up. I had it somehow linked into Onedrive with twist.

Oh well.  Thanks for the reply. Will be buying the LIFETIME tommorow.

Anyone want to buy a slightly used Lifetime License to Plex..... HAHA just kidding.
