If you're talking about adding a path to it from Emby Server yes you need to be able to access it.

You would either need to setup a user account and mount it on the server OR setup the drive for anonymous access.
If you are using a Shield TV you can set this up directly on the Shield TV in system menu using a username and password.

What you need to do is mount the network path to a local path using the tools the operating system. Then add that local path in to Emby Server.

using the tools the operating system?? what tools i can use to do that?

Hi. I'm not sure you can with a Mi Box.  I think only the Shield has this capability right now (but could be wrong).

Only the ShieldTV can do the mounting.

With a MiBox you need to have anonomous/guest access without the need for a login.

Have you thought of plugging the USB drive into the MiBox vs the router?

I don't know how this would work from Android TV but you could experiment with setting up a guest account or setting a user/passwords and trying something like

smb://user_name:password@server_name/sharename
or maybe
//user_name:password@server_name/sharename

from the Android TV box.

I honestly don't know if this is possible or not from ATV (other than Shield TV).  If you can't figure this out by the weekend I can try this for you but need to reconfigure a couple things to do it.

Have you done any Google searches on accesses anonymous drive share in Android TV?

What do you consider low budget?
How many hard drives do you think you'll want to install in the NAS? 2, 4 or more?

Personally I'd save up some additional money then get something like a Synology 920+ as it will have 4 drive bays, an Intel 64 Celeron CPU with built in QuickSync which can do transcoding and tone mapping for 4K content. It's probably more like $550 or so but gives you a lot more options.  You can add additional memory to bring it up to 8GB with a $25 memory chip on Amazon, It has 2 SSD m.2 slots if you want to add (optional) for caching to make the box faster yet.  It can be expanded by eSATA and even USB3 drives plugged into it can be made made available.

It's actually a good platform to run Emby Server on and just works without the issues of other low cost solutions.
