jonwolds 3 Posted May 25, 2021 Posted May 25, 2021 Hi, What was the conclusion to the discussions I've seen on HDR switching on Windows 10? Is there a way for the Emby client to use HDR switching on/off based on content like Kodi does? Or do I have to manually turn HDR on/off in Windows? If it's the latter then it's a step back compared with Kodi which is disappointing for licenced software. Thanks, Jon

Luke 42085 Posted May 25, 2021 Posted May 25, 2021 Hi, what is the issue with turning it on in windows?
jonwolds 3 Posted May 25, 2021 Author Posted May 25, 2021 My assumption is it would make SDR content sub-optimal. Is that not the case? I should also say that the app and server are in general totally awesome and I became a lifetime member knowing this in advance. 1

Are you talking about HDR ability in a client running on Windows 10 such as Theater Desktop? Are you talking about the server running on Windows 10?
jonwolds 3 Posted May 25, 2021 Author Posted May 25, 2021 -Windows 10 -Windows HDR set to off -KODI play HDR video. TV switches to HDR mode (logo displayed top left of screen as it turns on) -Emby theatre desktop (or the Windows store version) - play HDR content but TV does not switch to HDR mode does that help?
Carlo 4561 Posted May 25, 2021 Posted May 25, 2021 Yes that explains the problem. I do not use this config so I can't specifically help you but I'm sure someone else will be able to help. I'm curious however why you have HDR set to off? Does it interfere with normal desktop use?
jonwolds 3 Posted May 25, 2021 Author Posted May 25, 2021 It’s a HTPC. I set HDR to off on Windows because I think (but may be wrong) it degrades how SDR content is displayed. I can do some testing on that.

jonwolds 3 Posted May 26, 2021 Author Posted May 26, 2021 subjectively playing SDR on a HDR activated TV does change the picture colours. At the moment I will stick to kodi with an emby backend for the HTPC and 4K HDR tv and use emby client for everything else. I would switch to emby from kodi if the hdr toggling was introduced as it’s so much easier to work with.
Carlo 4561 Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 I don't know if this would be of any interest to you but this utility can switch your desktop from SDR to HDR and back again quite easily. You should be able to adopt it for HTPC use. https://github.com/bradgearon/hdr-switch/releases
jonwolds 3 Posted May 27, 2021 Author Posted May 27, 2021 That’s great, thanks very much for sharing. 1
