This is just a general question for all of you that have 4k HDR movies as well as non 4k files of the same movie. Are you finally comfortable with the transcoding/tonemapping to delete your non 4k HDR versions and just have one file of each? Thinking of cleaning up my files a bit and maybe saving some storage at the same time but wanting to make sure it works well enough for my users with non 4k HDR TV's etc.

Hi.  The current implementation is only going to tone map when transcoding is involved.  So, you may still have a need for both (depending on your exact situation).

We will be improving the ability to force tone mapping when transcoding is not needed in the future.

It does but you need to be selected and test IMHO.

There are many flavors of 4K HDR but not every version can be transcoded by Emby.

So what you could do is go into Movies (wherever) and do a filter for 4K movies.  Now try playing back the 4K version is a web browser to force transcoding (use stats for nerds).
If it transcodes fine for you then you should be fine to "delete" the non 4K media.

However, as a safe guard I'd MOVE the non 4K media to a holding spot for a few weeks just in case.

In my instance I have an GTX 1070 handling the transcoding which seems to handle a few 4k transcodes fairly well. Would love a newer video card to handle that but well prices are ridiculous right now. I had already started testing movies by forcing transcoding like you suggested and for the most part seems to work pretty well. Per @ebr's comment of improving the ability to force tonemapping down the road may be worth waiting... but so far it looks really good. You guys did a great job with the implementation from what I can see!

Personally I think it's too early to start deleting decent bitrate 1080p masters.

A lot really depends on the playback screen quality and nature of the 1080p - ie a Remux or bitstarved version.

If you are playing back on a low end 1080p LCD screen - then you probably won't be able to tell the difference,  but if you are playing back on a half decent LCD or decent Plasma 1080p screen - then tonemapped HDR>SDR vs real 1080p SDR is sometimes 'wrong' and clearly not what the director intended.

I think I agree with that sentiment. Most of my 1080p masters have been full rips of my bluray collection so they're fairly high quality. My goal has always been to provide the best quality image for my family to view and that may be the best way to do so. Looks like I just need to invest in more drives for storage purposes haha.

I look forward to the day though that I can have just one version of each movie and let the server correctly play it on whatever display is being used. I really was just curious how everyone implements this now in their own individual setup.

Your GTX 1070 is actually still up there for transcoding - and can handle 6 (or more) - 4K > 1080p streams without issue - as it has 8Gb of Memory.   In this regard, it matches the latest GTX 20xx cards (with the same memory).  I'm not sure on GTX 30xx cards - but I don't believe they have more encoders/decoders - maybe more memory.

Have a look here for some insight - although this does not list the GTX 30xx cards - https://www.elpamsoft.com/?p=Plex-Hardware-Transcoding

I agree as well and in part why I recommended moving the 1080 or other versions out of the library to a safe spot and not just outright delete them.

It gives you a chance to change your mind and put them back.  You might also find that Emby does a great job on 9 out of every 10 HDR files but once in a while one is off a bit in color, etc

I've seen that list before.. and yeah I'm super happy with the 1070. I'm just finicky and sometimes like to upgrade for future proofing when I can. But yes, 100% for now I'm in great shape with that card.

I think my biggest thought moving forward is how to best utilize my collection of movies for people viewing. Super happy with how it works now but obviously always room for improvement.

ps - If you were not aware, the latest crypto mining craze is now using hard drive space - Aghhhh - so if you are needing large capacity hard drive space, now is the time to buy another HDD as prices are already starting to rapidly increase .... 😒

It depends whether yesterday's 30% drop sticks - we've been here before.

But a lot of these folks are in China, where the central bank has spoken against crypto currencies, so that might scare them more.  Maybe the bubble really is about to burst.

It's already getting harder to find larger capacity drives at half way decent prices. These guys truly are a pain in the A**. Can it be to much to want to find graphics cards and hard drives when someone wants them? That being said.... I have enough invested in crypto that I don't wish for it to go down the toilet though haha
