BillybobBilly 18 Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 I've been using MP3Tag to organize my music library and most of it has been incorporated into Emby correctly. Unfortunately there are a few weird issues that exist and I can't quite figure out why. Namely I'm seeing a few albums listed with an album artist of "Lbum Artist" I thought maybe this was a result of goofed-up Musicbrainz tags or other tag sources being glitched but I've gone into MP3Tag and completely cleared all fields except the ones I want (album art, artist, album artist, genre, album, title, disc number, track number). I've had horrible luck with Musicbrainz in the past messing up my ID information so I just assume dump it in the garbage. Here is a picture of what I'm seeing: I've tried manually changing the metadata for each song from within Emby and the information reverts to Lbum Artist every time I change it. I've tried re-scanning the library and nothing has changed. If anyone has encountered this issue or something similar could you please let me know what you did to correct it?
Luke 42089 Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 Hi, that value is probably tagged in the audio files somewhere. If you install Picard you might be able to see it.

I run all of my files through Mp3tag and I'm running a macro that automatically deletes all tag information that doesn't fit the criteria I've listed above. Does Picard modify tag information that MP3tag is unable to interact with? I was under the impression that MP3tag is the most comprehensive source for fixing/editing this information. Picard, in my experience, is completely unreliable and majorly messed up my collection about 6 months ago resulting in around 3-400 hours of manually fixing stuff... This was user error but I've been soured ever since. Additionally, I pulled up a different album that has this issue and I inspected the metadata for that album in Emby. It lists the following: I'm not really sure what is going on with this information.. It is just dropping off the first letter of the category. This looks like an Emby issue moreso than an issue with the file or tags I've set up. Especially since, like I said before, I've cleared all the tag information. The file structure for this album is as follows, so maybe it has something to do with the issue? Music\!K\King Weed\The Seven Sins in Doomsday [2020] I've got quite a few other albums all configured the same way without issue. I'm only seeing this problem with the florence listed above (actually all 4 albums from that box set), this King Weed album and an album by The Brian Jonestown Massacre (though this album I believe has issues with its tag information because it shows up as non-album tracks... I'm investigating this issue separately)) Edited May 18, 2021 by BillybobBilly
BillybobBilly 18 Posted May 18, 2021 Author Posted May 18, 2021 (edited) I did find another post with a similar issue and it appeared to be something with embedded information for the file. I'm not really sure how to modify this as I can't even see it in MP3tag. Edit: I downloaded another program that shows the embed information accurately. I'm not seeing any issues that would result in Emby outputting "Lbum Artist" As you can see the tags are pretty straight forward. I've cleaned up the file quite extensively. It should be noted... If I set the album to just "Lungs" It does not get sorted into Lbum Artist. But because I'm using a custom Album title it seems to mess it up. Now, I have custom album titles for hundreds of albums and this is not an issue. Additionally, the above example with the King Weed musicbrainz typos does not have custom album naming nor custom artist naming so the issue isn't isolated there. This is what I show for a King Weed song experiencing the sorting issue into Lbum Artist. I'm not really sure where/why it generated the goofed up Musicbrainz information but as you can see, that information is not present in the Florence + the Machine file and it is still listed under Lbum Artist... I've scanned the library about 10 times at this point without success... Also tried restarting the Emby Server and that didn't do anything either. The tag information looks like neither file should be sorted into Lbum Artist... Another edit: So I went into Emby's Metadata manager and manually changed the artist and album artist information for the Florence + The Machine album pictured above. Now it reads, for each track Florence + The Machine but the album is still listed under "Lbum Artist" when sorted... This is incredibly frustrating/confusing... Carlo 4561 Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 It's a tag issue. Try running each track through ffprobe which is in the Emby server binary directory. This is what Emby uses to retrieve this information. If you want to zip up the album I'd be happy to take a look at it for you.
Solution pwhodges 2014 Posted May 18, 2021 Solution Posted May 18, 2021 (edited) I only recently found that some of my files had a tag "AlbumArtist" as well as the expected "Album Artist", with different info. This is hard to find in Mp3tag - you can only see it in one file at a time using the menu item: View / Extended Tags. As a result I am switching to using TagScanner, which enables you to clear this in multiple tracks at once, unlike Mp3tag. Paul Edited May 18, 2021 by pwhodges

If you want to zip up the album I'd be happy to take a look at it for you. So I got this sorted on 2/5 of the albums by doing a search for missing metadata on my entire library. Now instead of being in artist Lbum Artist these last two albums are in Florence + The Machine (separate from the actual Florence + The Machine where all the albums are correctly located). Near as I can tell the files that did not get sorted all had the weird "usicbrain" bit in the Musicbrain tag section. So for some reason it pulled that data and applied Florence + The Machine likely because I manually changed the emby artist information earlier today... I'm not sure how to use FFprobe but all of the tag information on these files has been cleared completely at this point. I'm really not sure why only some of them properly converted when I refreshed missing metadata on my entire library... 8 hours ago, pwhodges said: I only recently found that some of my files had a tag "AlbumArtist" as well as the expected "Album Artist", with different info. In Mp3Tag there is a default "Album Artist" and "Album Artist Sort" which was hidden. I'm not sure if this is the cause of the issue but I'm looking into it. The files were all listed "Florence AND The Machine instead of Florence + The Machine... so I'm guessing this is connected. Edit: This was, indeed the issue. For some reason this value, which does not appear on extended tag view, is being read by Emby in a weird way and causing the sorting to go all crazy. This is where the weird "Lbum Artist" was located in the final Album I fixed. Edited May 19, 2021 by BillybobBilly
Carlo 4561 Posted May 19, 2021 Posted May 19, 2021 Glad you got it worked out. It can surely be a bit of a challenge the first time dealing with something like this tag related but once you've dove in and solved the problem it's second nature to fix any tag related issues in the future.
