TonyRostron 6 Posted May 10, 2021 Posted May 10, 2021 Hi, I would like some advice please. I've just bought a machine which is "always on". Spec: - AMD E2 9000e processor ( 1.5GHz base, 2.0GHz Turbo frequency, dual Cores dual Threads). - 256GB M.2 SATA SSD - 8GB DDR4 RAM - Fanless - AMD Radeon R2 Graphics - 2xDisplayPort, 1xVGA for Audio/Video output I have been told the cpu is low powered because of it being designed for an always on use case I still plan to run my emby client on it. The hard drive (ssd) is very large and can hold allmkf the media I have on my server. This will be plugged in via LAN to a mesh cube (but the mesh cube is wireless). 1) will emby run ok? 2) is it better that I choose the download setting to copy the media to the device and play locally on the machine or is it still ok to stream? None of the media is in anything higher than 1080p. Thanks
pwhodges 2014 Posted May 10, 2021 Posted May 10, 2021 Can you clarify what you wish to do? When you say "Emby client" do you actually mean Emby server? If so, then you would need to avoid transcoding, but I expect you should be able to direct play. This would mean ensuring that your media is in formats that your client devices can play without needing transcoding. Paul
TonyRostron 6 Posted May 10, 2021 Author Posted May 10, 2021 Sure, so I have a Synology NAS with emby server on. This streams the media to all of the TVs I have. But I am running a kiosk on an always on windows 10 pc. That's the machine I referred to in post 1. That machine has only got a slow processor. So my question was can the Emby client (not the server) which is installed on the kiosk machine be able to run since the CPU isn't too fast, and secondly, is it better for that machine to download the media to it since it is SSD and has a sufficiently large disk space if the CPU is causing sluggish response? Or don't you think it matters. Many thanks
Carlo 4561 Posted May 10, 2021 Posted May 10, 2021 If you mean using Emby Theater on that low powered machine it will likely work ok for anything up to 1080. It might struggle on 4K material. Then again it may handle the 4K material as well if the bitrate isn't too high and the GPU can keep up. In any case Ethernet is preferred over WIFI whenever possible. You should be able to stream these files but with Theater you can setup Optional Paths and play them directly from the file system whenever possible. https://support.emby.media/support/solutions/articles/44001159320-optional-network-paths
TonyRostron 6 Posted May 11, 2021 Author Posted May 11, 2021 Hi Cayars, you're often my source of support. Yes I bought an emby license actually for the device since it is a touchscreen so I think maybe emby theatre. I got this after the very first time you helped me. Thank you for that answer. What I will do then to circumvent the wireless (although LANd into a mesh cube but that's still wireless), I'll copy locally to the device my content since it's a large SSD and put the optional path down for those and disable the network library. That was ultimately the answer I was looking for so thank you Also as a sidenote I managed to get a static IP address we discussed since my existing ISP was in fact CGNAT that you detected. So 5hank you on that one too as my remote issue is now fixed as well.
Carlo 4561 Posted May 11, 2021 Posted May 11, 2021 Sounds good. Thanks for the updates. Keep us informed how you make out with the touchscreen device.
