About movies with multiple versions - EmbyServer 4.5.4.0

Hi
I prioritize movies in multi-version files, such as dual audio and dual quality.
So the structure of my movie folder is this:
Avatar (2009) - Dubbed HD.mp4 - (720p)
Avatar (2009) - Dubbed FHD.mp4 - (1080p)
Avatar (2009) - Subtitled HD.mp4 - (720p)
Avatar (2009) - Subtitled FHD.mp4 - (1080p)

So with that in mind, I would like to know if it is possible to leave the HD video (720p) as a default, so that it is required as a priority and if the customer wants to watch another version, then he chooses among the available ones.

Thank you from now on.

Hi, there is no single default. The default is chosen based on the quality settings in the app, the server, etc. So it will be unique each time to choose the most optimal version.

Hi, thank you very much for answered.
I am not sure if I understood correctly.
As far as I could understand, then, each emby application on the various devices and even the web application, are all adaptive and record the customer's choice, setting it as the default? Would it be this?
If the Emby iOS client plays for the first time in 1080p, will its iOS app always keep the 1080p version as a priority for playback, if available?

There isn't a default as in "Always play back 720" or "Always playback 1080".

As an example the software could look at several things such as the client resolution, client bitrate (or queried for bandwidth if using AUTO). It then looks at the user setting on the server to see if there is a personal bitrate set by the admin for that user OR if there is a global bitrate set for all users.  Now it has a bitrate it knows it can use.  Now the different versions can be looked at to see what best fits the criteria.

So one movie might have a 720 that best fits and another movie could be 1080 as each movie is likely encoded differently and have different bandwidths.

So the client & server work together to try and pick the best match.

Hope that helps

Have there been any requests to be able to designate a default that overrides the quality calculations?  In a few instances, I have a alternate cut of a movie in 720p and a theatrical cut in 1080p and I would love to peg the alt cut as the default. (I know I could separate them into separate folders, but I love the Version drop-down for keeping related things together).

Same when you have a normal version and a 3D version of movie used this way. Most/many of us keep seperate 3D libraries because of this.  Nothing like playing a movie back and it's a split screen that's all fuzzy.  A lot of people don't know what 3D looks like on a non 3D TV and that always throws them. :)

Good idea. +1

Hah!  I don't have any 3D movies, but that would certainly confuse the heck out of my mom if I had them combined with 2D versions! 😃

Yea, my dad would have an issue (bless his 86 years) with this occasionally so I finally moved my 3D films to their own lib and then only gave myself access to them since I only have one 3D TV and no other family member does.  Problem solved.
