playback stops with hardware transcoding enabled - no issues with hardware turned off

I just purchased premiere and one reason was to be able to use hardware transcoding. With it turned on, my videos will play for anywhere from 10-30 seconds or so then the playback just stops. I can look at the dashboard and see that the transcoding is still happening in the background and I can also look at task manager on my server and see that my GPU is doing the transcoding. If I try to select the play button nothing happens. If I turn off hardware transcoding everything works just fine with no stoppage.

My hardware is i7-6700k, 16 gigs RAM, GTX1070. I have tried playback on both Chrome on my Mac and my FireTV cube and both exhibit the same issue. I have tried with both H.264 and H.265 files and both do the same thing. I have also installed Emby as a service using NSSM as suggested and no change. I have attached the log. Please let me know if you need any more information or if this is a known issue.

Hi,

Have you tried playing back standard movies or tv shows not "home produced"?

This file "032121.mp4" in your home vlog collection I'm guessing is home produced?  What software did you use to create it?

The log is showing it's being converted plenty fast enough (around 3X) so no problems in that.  I did notice it generating subtitles on the fly.
Can you try playback without using subs and see if that makes a difference in playback?  We need to narrow down where the problem is.

Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes most of the movies on my server are created by me. And yes that one was one I created. I use Premiere Pro.

I don't use subtitles so I'm not sure why it is showing that. I'll check my settings though and see if I have subtitles turned on. I'm not seeing them though. Let me do some checking...

OK, I found the subtitles setting and it was set to Default. I changed it to No Subtitles, turned hardware transcoding back on, and tried to play an H.264 movie and it played for 26 seconds then stopped. I've attached the log here.

One more thing - I did manage to find a movie in my library that needed transcoding but it was only 2.5Mbps MP3 and transcoded at 2500fps so I don't know if that's a good test. It played fine though.

Any chance you could provide us a file to use for testing?

Sure. How would you like for me to get it to you? The max attachment here is 195 megs.

You can use any of the generic internet upload sites that give a generic URL back to you that is good for X days.

You could try https://filebin.net/

I've not heard anything further since uploading the sample video as requested. Any more information for me?

I don't appear to have an issues transcoding this file at all on my GTX 1070.   Mine played all the way through.

I've just been comparing your ffmpeg log to mine - and they are looking identical... hmm

Do you have 'throttle' turned on ?

Let me dig into this a bit more - we may need @softworkz to investigate ..

I'm sorry could have swore I posted but this is what I get

So as you can see this does play back fine with hardware on my system with the GTX 1650.

So that's two of use with different GPUs not having an issue.
Have you checked your drive space to make sure you have enough space available for the transcode file on the server?

Yep - I run the same CPU and GPU as you 👍 - with throttle turned off - the 1070 is transcoding the entire clip in ~ 46 seconds (you can see below).

Thanks for the replies. To answer questions, I have throttling turned off. I have 782 gigs free on my drive.

The strangest thing to me is that when the playback stops, the transcode continues without any problems so it doesn't seem to be a transcoding issue. It's as if I have paused the playback even though I haven't, because the play/pause changes to play. However if I click it, it will not resume playback but the play button will turn to the pause button as if it is playing back. Trying to rewind 10 seconds doesn't work either.

Have you tried with throttling turn on - ie only transcode when required to fill the buffer?  It should not make any difference tbh but lets eliminate it if we can, as this is buffer 'related' as it works for a period and then stops.

Just gave it a shot and no change...

You are able to reproduce this exact same thing using multiple clients correct?
Is your Emby Server connected via Ethernet?
How about your different clients?

Correct. Yes my server is connected via Ethernet and one of my clients is as well, the others are Wifi. However I can reproduce this issue playing back on the server itself so it's not a networking problem.

That does make it seem to be a server issue but what?

I've been meaning to update the drivers for my video card so I think I'll do that tonight and see if maybe that does anything. I'll report back tomorrow.

Again thanks to everyone for their help thus far. Much appreciated.

OK I updated to the latest drivers for my 1070 and no change. Would enabling debug logging and sending the resulting log help any?

Could we setup a remote session so I could take a look at a few things and we could run a couple of tests?
