clexp678 0 Posted April 15, 2021 Posted April 15, 2021 Hi, Couple of 'silly questions' if you would humour a new starter. I want to set up the following: 1. music files on server in the home, FreeNAS. 2. music browsed on a phone, wandering about the house (kitchen on the wifi, not external), and choice music made, on the phone but not played on the phone, instead - 3. Music played over the Kitchen sound system, could this be an rpi /what else could it be? As far as I can tell this is not Emby's model, ( or system's model). I appreciate this is a 3 part model, not the Emby 2 part client server model. The closest I can come to this is Baleana Sound, but in that case it is the phone that carries the media, not the server. I sort of envisage the album at appearing on the phone (control device) while the music is sent to the play back device. Thanks, and sorry if this was obvious.

Guest Posted April 15, 2021 Posted April 15, 2021 What is the kitchen sound system.. Client output can sometimes simply be down to the device.. simple setup.
clexp678 0 Posted April 16, 2021 Author Posted April 16, 2021 Thanks for coming back so fast, The kitchen sound systems really is a dumb sound system from the 90s. I have a choice of two - a pretty one that can only do cd tape and radio but no line in, and an older less pretty one That does the same but does have a line in. I thought I could use an rpi or even an old phone with jack output. If I use the newer prettier system I would just take the speakers from it and drive them from an rpi DAC. If I use the older one then I can use the line in and leave the system with a radio and cd capabilities. The users here grew up in the 90s and like their CDs. They won't rip new CDs to the server, so that is left to me (I did their whole collection so far). I may get earache if new CDs are not immediately available (their moaning), so leaving a CD player in situ is a comfort blanket for them, but not a necessity. Would the Emby app give me a way of seeing the album art on the phone, clicking play and getting it over the kitchen hifi? I can see I could put an emby client on the rpi in the kitchen, with emby on the server, would that work? best regards
Guest Posted April 16, 2021 Posted April 16, 2021 I am assuming there is a server already.... and RPI being a raspberry PI 3 or 4... the RPI from what I hear usually good as clients... not great for servers because of transcoding needs for video.. The Raspberry PI would allow you to add Video output as well... So more capability.. BUT using the speakers from the old system may not necessarily be a good idea, because you may need an amplifier to push them or the system they came from. And yes the phone should allow you to see the album art. I use the Web Client on my phone and it works. So the RPI is a good option and adds video player capability.. but you may still need the system with line-in with that setup as well... unless you choose something like a set of amplified speakers.. Like computer speakers or Bluetooth, and you will need a monitor or TV output for the RPI to see the art and video. I would say the one without the line-in is probably removable.. maybe a backup for them somewhere else. I suggest this because of usual space requirements for the whole thing... smaller system.. with the exception of the screen.
Carlo 4560 Posted April 16, 2021 Posted April 16, 2021 You may want to look into Google Nest or Amazon Alexa/Echo to see if this could be used with your current sound system but not sure without a line in of some kind on existing equipment. But with either of these devices you can "talk" to emby and playback (with proper config) to the device itself which can then output to your speaker system or use the internal speaker. You could then do something like the following using only your voice "Alexa, tell/ask m. b. home to playback Pink Floyd on Alexa" . This is nice when cooking or when your hands are dirty. Besides playback of Media these are great devices for the Kitchen as you can have them do timers for you when cooking as well "Alexa set 10 minute timer for Pasta" and have multiple timers as well. You can do this while playing back music too.
