Fishing wires through you house is actually easier then you might think. That is... If you have drywall walls. If it is lath and plaster it is harder.

Don't be afraid to cut holes in your drywall everywhere in your home. You can patch and paint, and it is very easy to do.

The "California Patch" is the trick to fixing holes!

At first my wife thought I was crazy cutting holes everywhere, but it was super simple to patch, and I know more about what is happening inside the walls of my home.

If you ever rip the ceiling out of your basement, that is the time to run CAT wiring because you can access the main floor. 

Just remember that your basement walls are actually inset from your main floor exterior walls (because your house is sitting on top of them) when you are measuring to access the inside of your walls on the main floor. That is literally the trickiest part. But once you figure it out, it becomes really easy to pull the wires through.

It will also add value  and update  your home, if it is wired. 

 

I purchased this long drill bit for making holes:

 

I was able to cut though most of my joists for lighting, and push through sub floor into my walls upstairs, to run CAT6.

 

I had to use a hammer drill to get through some areas because we have an addition, and I had to go through the concrete foundation, but mostly I used the long fishing drill bit.

 

Keep you scrap drywall. That is super important! So you can make your California Patches. Then go around your house and cut holes everywhere! Your wife will love you for it! .

 

I was able to remodel my basement by myself in four weeks. All new 14/2 wiring (read you local wiring code before attempting it). 

I went to "YouTube University" to learn it all.

Okay here is a couple tricks to getting the Raspberry Pi running Unifi with a small screen on your network.

After you install Raspberry Pi OS

1. Open the boot drive on you machine you etched the raspberry pi OS on.

2. In the "Boot" drive add a file called "SSH" without any extension.

This tells the Raspberry Pi to enable SSH on boot. This means you can do everything without ever attaching a keyboard or mouse to your Pi.

3. Follow the link I posted above to install Unifi Controller. That will load the controller and it will tell the pi to load it on boot.

4. In the Pi "autostart" file tell the pi to load chrome browser to open the Unifi web service with the "--kiosk" param, to make it fill screen.

Nice - love the controller idea - that does look cool 

I run mine as a service on windows, it's web based so can control it via any web browser on any device I like but having as a dedicated device does have it's advantages.

I'm putting a rush on things now. The network panel has been upgraded to Ubiquiti stuff. The cable management needs some follow up. I have flooring arriving tomorrow.

Filling up a bit more, and got a third Unifi flex. Just gotta get my hands on a cheap (but decent) 4k tv... A big one.. and the wife can't find out until it's here and it's to late to return it

The prices on the decent 4K TVs are actually starting to come down, even the big ones.  But not at the combination of price and available content that I have pulled the trigger on yet either.  But every once in a while there is a big sporting event available in 4K that makes me rethink my stance

The nice thing about 720 or 1080 over 4K for sporting events is you don't "see" your home team suck as bad when they lose. LOL

Got that 4k tv I wanted. But... (because there is always a "but")... The HDMI wire I spent extra on and feed through the wall when I built the place is faulty. The HDR on the movies look all snowy and the TV keeps switching between HDR and Power saving. Argh! What a let down. Prime Cables is going to hear from me tomorrow for sure. I spent over sixy bucks in a good HDMI cable for this exact purpose.

Otherwise, the tv works awesome with my other HDMI cable.

Arghhhh.. feel for you buddy.  Experience will tell you to always TEST any cables before you board over them - and if possible, run the cables with 'pull strings' attached for specialist cables to allow you to pull the cable back out and/or feed a replacement in.   Did you run the HDMI's in flex conduit ?
