AJV_20 57 Posted April 10, 2021 Posted April 10, 2021 Hey guys just wondering if Atmos support is on the roadmap for the Apple TV. I see it works almost everywhere else except the Apple TV
raevengel 0 Posted April 21, 2021 Posted April 21, 2021 I'd be interested to know this as well. Following.
vdatanet 1617 Posted April 21, 2021 Posted April 21, 2021 Apple TV only uses Atmos EAC3, used in streaming services. Most Atmos content is TrueHD, and that is not supported by Apple TV. If you need Atmos TrueHD you should use another device. 1 1

I have some m4a audio files in Atmos EAC3 (see attached image), but when I play these in the Emby app on Apple TV the receiver does not show Atmos but Surround instead. If I Airplay the exact same file via Quicktime Player from my MacBook Pro to my Apple TV, the receiver does show Atmos. Then I switched off audio transcoding in Emby, to see if it would work and the audio files still play in the Emby app on Apple TV but still no Atmos on the receiver. With transcoding still off, I tried on my iPhone with my Airpods Pro. In the Emby app on iPhone the audio files play but no Atmos indication in the Airpods Pro menu, but when I connect to Emby in the Safari browser and then play the same file, there is an Atmos indication in the Airpods Pro menu. Does this mean Atmos EAC3 is not supported through the Emby App on Apple TV and iPhone? I also noticed when I switched off audio transcoding in Emby, that the audio files did not play anymore in Google Chrome, I got an error about non-available streams. I think Chrome currently can''t play Atmos EAC3 files and therefore needs to be transcoded by the Emby server.
Mulderkekou 2 Posted March 31, 2024 Posted March 31, 2024 I think your problem is with m4a files. If you can, test with mkv
Luke 42077 Posted April 2, 2024 Posted April 2, 2024 Or mp4. We are looking into improving this. Thanks.

Deihmos 169 Posted November 15, 2025 Posted November 15, 2025 Atmos works with only the native player for both MKV and MP4; however, Dolby Vision and HDR do not work with MKV video using the native player. If you want both HDR and Atmos, you will need to repack the video to MP4. There is a great tool that I used to do this that works very well and integrates with everything: sickbeard_mp4_automator.

Luke 42077 Posted November 30, 2025 Posted November 30, 2025 Hi, yes we are continuing to work on improving it. Thanks for the feedback.
Geordie 11 Posted November 30, 2025 Posted November 30, 2025 With mp4: Dolby Atmos and Vision both work perfectly already with the native player in Emby if the file is mp4 TV brings up DV & DA logos. With mkv: Dolby Atmos works when the server does a remux + direct play Dolby Vision doesn't work (natively) as Emby doesn't currently support HEVC with the native player and transcodes to H264 instead.. I've setup another thread with a suggested fix to get HEVC (and thus Dolby Vision) working with the native player: I'm trying to build support for this fix as it will dramatically improve Emby's HDR support on Apple TV 1
